Replace Garage Door Rollers
Goal
Replace the rollers (the wheels that run in the track) on a residential sectional garage door. Worn rollers cause noisy operation, sticking/binding during travel, and accelerated wear on hinges + tracks. Often discovered during annual service; high-margin add-on if all rollers are replaced as a set.
Prerequisites
- 10 replacement rollers for standard 7-ft residential (single-car); 12 for 8-ft, more for double-car
- Roller types matched to existing:
- Steel rollers with stem (cheapest; noisy + wear faster)
- Nylon rollers with stem (quieter + smoother; recommend as upgrade)
- Sealed-bearing nylon
- Locking pliers + screwdrivers
- 30 - 60 minutes
Steps
- Close the door + clamp to the track on both sides with locking pliers (prevents door from rising during work).
- Disconnect the opener via emergency release.
- Identify roller types in the door. Steel-stem rollers vs ball-bearing nylon vs sealed-bearing nylon. Match the replacement to the existing OR upgrade with customer's consent.
- Replace BOTTOM rollers first. Bottom rollers are easiest to access + most likely to be worn from full-weight contact.
- Remove the locking pliers from one side
- Lift the bottom corner of the door slightly
- Pull the bottom roller stem out of the bracket
- Insert new roller into the bracket + back into the track
- Replace HINGE rollers (middle + top). Each section's roller stem is held by the hinge bracket between sections. Removal varies:
- Some require unscrewing the hinge bracket
- Some have a slot that allows removal without dismantling the hinge
- Replace TOP rollers carefully. Top rollers sit in the top section + are held by the top bracket. The cable attaches to the top bracket on each side; this is the most-tensioned area.
- For top-bracket rollers: don't remove the cable attachment. Some top rollers can be replaced without dismantling the cable assembly; others require partial dismantling.
- Verify each new roller spins freely in the track. Stiff or sticky = wrong fit OR bent stem.
- Remove locking pliers from both sides.
- Reconnect opener.
- Operate the door 3 cycles. Listen for:
- Smooth, quiet operation (especially noticeable upgrade vs old steel rollers)
- No binding at section transitions
- No clicking from individual rollers
Verification
- All rollers replaced + spinning freely
- Door operates smoothly 3 cycles
- No new noise from any roller
- Customer can feel + hear the quieter operation (upgrade selling point)
Troubleshooting
- Roller stem doesn't fit the bracket: wrong stem diameter. Standard residential is 1/2"; some doors use 7/16" or other sizes. Verify before purchase.
- Roller binds in track: track itself may be damaged or twisted. Verify track alignment.
- New rollers noisy quickly: lubricant not applied to the bearings (some sealed-bearing rollers don't need lube; some do).
- Door skews left/right during travel after replacement: didn't replace ALL rollers + the older ones are dragging. Replace as a SET, not piecemeal.
The "set replacement" approach is honest + higher-margin. Customer comes in asking about a noisy roller; you find 3 worn ones. Replacing all 10 (the whole set) costs in parts vs for 3, but the customer gets uniform operation + quiet operation that lasts. Replace by the set; explain why; customers appreciate the honest framing.
