Opener Won't Respond Diagnostic
Why this matters
"Opener won't open" is the second-most-common service call in garage door (after "broken spring"). The fix is often in parts - a setting reset, photoeye realignment, OR remote battery. Knowing the tree saves 30 - 60 minutes per call + closes calls without unnecessary parts.
Symptom verification
Confirm what "won't respond" means:
- No response to remote (motor doesn't run, no lights, no sound)
- No response to wall button
- Both remote + wall button dead
- Door starts to open then reverses immediately
- Lights flash but door doesn't move
Each leads to a different path.
Tree 1: Both remote + wall button dead
Step 1: Power
- Check overhead light on opener - if dead, no power
- Outlet test: plug a lamp in; works = outlet is good
- GFCI test: garage outlets often on GFCI; reset if tripped
- Breaker: trip + reset
- If outlet works + opener doesn't power up, internal logic board failure OR power-input cable broken
Step 2: Manual disconnect engaged?
- Most openers have a manual disconnect (red cord pull)
- If pulled, opener motor still runs but trolley doesn't engage door
- Re-engage: pull cord toward door, then pull cord back, OR cycle the opener until trolley re-couples
- Common confusion in tenant + rental situations
Step 3: Lock-out engaged?
- Some openers have a "vacation lock" or "lockout" switch
- Wall button has a lock indicator OR a separate lock switch
- Toggle off
Tree 2: Wall button works, remote doesn't
Step 1: Remote battery
- Open remote; visual battery condition
- Replace battery (most are CR2032 or A23)
- Test
Step 2: Re-program the remote to the opener
- Press LEARN button on opener (color varies - purple, orange, red, yellow per generation)
- Within 30 seconds, press remote button
- Opener confirms (light blinks OR beeps)

Step 3: Receiver capacitor (older AC openers)
- Symptom: short remote range; works only within 10 ft of opener
- Replace receiver capacitor OR replace receiver module
- For newer DC openers: receiver is integrated; replace logic board
Step 4: Frequency interference
- 315 MHz + 390 MHz frequencies common
- Newer LED bulbs (especially low-quality) interfere with 315 MHz; swap LED for incandescent or LED rated for garage door openers
- Other RF devices (wireless cameras, baby monitors) may interfere

Step 3: Wall button itself
- Most wall buttons have a momentary switch
- Short the two terminals at the button with a screwdriver - does the opener cycle?
- If yes, replace wall button
Tree 4: Door opens but reverses immediately on close
Step 1: Photoeye alignment
- Photoeyes are infrared sensors at ground level on each side of door
- Both must be aligned + clear of obstruction
- Indicator LEDs: most photoeyes have green + amber LEDs visible
- Green = receiver photoeye aligned + receiving beam
- Amber = sender photoeye sending
- If green flickers or off, realign sender to receiver
- Common: cobwebs, dust, sun glare cause false interruption

- Test continuity from photoeye to opener
- Common: mouse chew, lawn mower hit, kid-pulled wire
- Repair or replace
Step 3: Travel limit overshoot
- Door reverses if it hits the floor too hard (mechanical reverse activated)
- Adjust down-travel limit; reduce travel by 1/8 turn at a time
- Adjust force settings if door requires excessive force to close
Step 4: Track binding
- Door physically binding causes high force; opener reverses thinking it's an obstruction
- Lubricate hinges + rollers
- Check for bent track, broken roller, hinge issue

Step 1: Diagnostic code
- Most modern openers flash a count of times indicating fault code
- Count flashes; reference manufacturer manual:
- LiftMaster + Chamberlain: 1 - 4 flashes indicates photoeye fault (most common)
- 5 flashes: logic board fault
- 6 + 7 flashes: motor or RPM sensor
- Address per code
Step 2: Force adjustment + travel limits
- After moving / replacing door, opener "learns" travel by holding pressure at each end
- If force or limits drifted, opener disables motion
- Re-run learn sequence per manufacturer

- Capacitor likely failed (AC openers)
- Open opener cover; test capacitor with multimeter
- If capacitor OK + motor hums without rotation, motor seized; opener replacement

- Press + release wall button; verify no stuck/sticky behavior
- Inspect wall button for moisture intrusion
Step 2: Code learning issue
- Remote previously programmed to another opener? Re-program to current opener
- Many older Sears-branded openers shared rolling-code algorithms; cross-talk possible
Step 3: RF interference
- Strong nearby RF source can trigger opener (rare but real)
- New WiFi router, cordless phone base, neighboring opener
- Update opener to current rolling-code model OR replace receiver
Before quoting a full opener replacement, ALWAYS check the receiver capacitor on AC-motor openers older than 8 years. A capacitor + 15 minutes of labor brings 60 - 80% of "broken opener" calls back to life. Customer expects quote; you bill service call + leave a hero. Repeat callbacks + referrals follow this kind of service. The capacitor failure is the single most common opener fault + the cheapest fix.
When to recommend replacement vs repair
- Opener 12+ years old + any logic board fault: replace
- Opener 8 - 12 years + capacitor or single-component fault: repair (parts available)
- Opener under 8 years + safety device fault: repair
- Opener under 5 years + ANY fault: warranty check first
