Opener vs Spring vs Track: Which Causes Jerky Travel Decision Tree

Why this matters

A door that travels in jerks, hesitations, or surges rather than smoothly has a fault in one of three systems: the opener drive (a worn chain, sprocket, or gear delivering uneven power), the counterbalance springs (out of balance so the door is heavy in one part of travel and light in another), or the track and rollers (binding, worn, or misaligned, adding intermittent resistance). The fix is completely different for each, and the wrong one leaves the jerk in place. Isolating which system is responsible, by separating the opener from the door and reading where in travel the jerk happens, gets you to a clean repair.

Symptom presentation

  • Jerk or surge from the opener head, chain slapping or sprocket skipping: drive-side fault.
  • Door speeds up and slows in a pattern tied to position (jerks at the same height every cycle): balance, the door is heavier or lighter at that point.
  • Door hesitates or jumps at a specific spot in the track: a track or roller fault at that location.
  • Whole-travel roughness by hand, not just under power: the door hardware, not the opener.

Quick checks

If the door is noticeably heavy or unbalanced by hand, the counterbalance springs are involved. Spring adjustment on a torsion system stores hazardous energy and requires correct winding bars and training. Do not adjust spring tension to chase a balance problem without the proper tools and procedure.

  • Pull the emergency release and move the door by hand through full travel. Jerk or bind present by hand is a door problem (track, rollers, or balance). Smooth by hand but jerky under power is an opener-drive problem.
  • With the release pulled, let go of the door at several heights. A balanced door holds roughly in place at any height. A door that drifts down at the top or shoots up at the bottom is out of balance, a spring issue.
  • Watch the rollers and track as the door moves by hand. A roller binding, a bent track rail, or a tight spot at a splice shows as a hesitation at that location.
  • Under power, watch the chain or belt and the sprocket. A loose chain slaps and surges; a worn sprocket or gear skips.

Branch 1, smooth by hand, jerky under power. Opener drive. A loose or worn chain surges and slaps; a worn drive sprocket or a chewing gear skips; a screw-drive carriage running dry or worn jerks. Tension or replace the chain, replace a worn sprocket or gear, lubricate or replace a screw drive. Confirm smooth powered travel.

Branch 2, jerky by hand at a consistent height, door drifts when released. Balance. The springs are mismatched, weakening, or set wrong, so the door is heavy in part of travel and the load changes abruptly. This is a spring and balance correction, handled as a hazardous task. Rebalance or replace springs to the door weight.

Branch 3, hesitation or jump at a specific track location, by hand. Track and rollers. A bent or pinched rail, a dented track at a splice, a flat-spotted or seized roller, or debris in the track catches at that spot. Straighten or replace the track section, replace the offending roller, clean the track. The fault location is the diagnosis.

Branch 4, whole-travel roughness by hand, no single spot. Multiple dry or worn rollers, worn hinges, or a generally misaligned track. Service the rollers and hinges, realign the track plumb and parallel.

Branch 5, jerk combined with reversing under power. The opener is reading the intermittent resistance and the force sensor is reacting. Fix the mechanical cause first; do not raise force to push through it.

A balance check has a number behind it worth knowing. Lift the door, with the opener disconnected, to roughly waist height, about three to four feet, and let go. A properly balanced door stays put within a few inches. A door that drifts downward has springs that are too weak or undersized for the door weight; a door that creeps upward has springs that are overwound or oversized. Either condition makes the load change abruptly through travel and the door surges or hesitates. The drift direction tells you which way the balance is off before you ever touch a spring, and the magnitude of the drift tells you how far out it is.

A chain-tension note for the opener branch: a chain that sags more than about half an inch below the rail slaps and surges, especially under direction changes at the top and bottom of travel. Tension the chain to the manufacturer's spec, generally so it rides just above the rail with minimal sag, and recheck after a few cycles. Over-tensioning is its own fault, loading the sprocket and bearings, so tension to spec rather than drum-tight.

Confirming diagnosis

The by-hand test is the master split: a door that is rough by hand has a door-hardware or balance fault, and a door that is smooth by hand but jerky powered has an opener-drive fault. From there, the release-and-hold test isolates balance (door drifts) from track (door is smooth to hold but catches at a location). Pinpoint the cause before adjusting anything, especially before touching spring tension.

Remediation

  • Opener drive: tension or replace the chain, replace the sprocket or gear, service the screw drive.
  • Balance and springs: rebalance or replace springs to the correct rate as a hazardous task, then retest opener force.
  • Track and rollers: straighten or replace the damaged track section, replace worn or seized rollers, realign the track.
  • General hardware: lubricate and replace worn rollers and hinges, retighten brackets.

Finish by confirming smooth, even travel both by hand and under power, then verify opener up/down force.
