Garage Door Material Reference
Why this matters
Garage door material is the single biggest cost + lifespan variable for the customer. A single-layer steel door + a insulated triple-layer steel + a carriage-house wood + a aluminum + glass - same opening, four very different products. The tech who can explain the tradeoffs in plain language closes the right job at the right price + the customer doesn't regret it.
Steel (the dominant residential material)
Single-layer steel
- Construction: one layer of steel face; no insulation; ribs for strength
- R-value: ~0 (no insulation)
- Weight: lightest
- Lifespan: 15 - 25 years with maintenance
- Best for: detached garages, mild climates, budget-driven projects
- Downside: dent-prone, no thermal break, noisy in wind + rain
- Color durability: paint fades 10 - 15 years; repaintable
Double-layer steel (steel + insulation)
- Construction: steel face + polystyrene OR polyurethane insulation + (sometimes) thin vinyl backer
- R-value: 6 - 9 (polystyrene); 9 - 14 (polyurethane)
- Weight: moderate
- Lifespan: 20 - 30 years
- Best for: attached garages, moderate climates
- Downside: insulation may delaminate over 15+ years
Triple-layer steel (steel + insulation + steel backer)
- Construction: sandwich - steel exterior face + polyurethane foam + steel interior face
- R-value: 12 - 19 (polyurethane); up to 22 with thick-foam premium
- Weight: heaviest of steel doors
- Lifespan: 25 - 40 years
- Best for: attached garages, cold climates, finished garage interiors
- Best dent resistance of steel options
- Best sound dampening
- Often the right choice for second-floor-bedroom-over-garage layouts
Aluminum + glass (modern)
Aluminum frame + glass panel
- Construction: aluminum extrusions framing tempered or laminated glass panels
- R-value: 1.5 - 6 depending on glass (single, double, insulated)
- Weight: moderate
- Lifespan: 25 - 40 years
- Best for: modern architecture, design-driven customers, high-end residential, mild climates
- Downside: high cost, limited insulation, glass replacement expensive if damaged
Full-view aluminum (commercial-style on residential)
- Construction: aluminum frame + large clear or frosted glass
- Common in modern coastal + contemporary builds
- Service work: glass panel replacement common at 10 - 20 years
Wood + composite
Solid wood (traditional + carriage house styles)
- Construction: wood frame + planking (cedar, redwood, mahogany, hemlock)
- R-value: 2 - 5 (uninsulated); 6 - 10 (insulated panels)
- Weight: heaviest material
- Lifespan: 30 - 50+ years with maintenance
- Best for: historic homes, high-end architectural, customer aesthetic preference
- Downside: requires refinishing every 3 - 7 years; heaviest weight stresses springs + opener; absorbs moisture if not maintained
Composite wood (wood-fiber + resin)
- Construction: engineered wood material formed to wood patterns; lighter than solid wood
- R-value: 4 - 9 (composite); higher with insulation core
- Weight: lighter than solid wood but heavier than steel
- Lifespan: 20 - 35 years
- Best for: wood look without maintenance burden; mid-budget upgrade
- Downside: lower-end products can fade or swell over years
Fiberglass

- Construction: fiberglass face + insulation core + aluminum frame
- R-value: 4 - 10
- Weight: moderate-light
- Lifespan: 25 - 40 years
- Best for: coastal salt-exposure environments (no rust), high-humidity
- Downside: can yellow under UV; some patterns look dated within 10 years
Vinyl (less common, regional)
- Construction: vinyl skin over insulation
- R-value: 6 - 14
- Weight: lightest
- Lifespan: 20 - 30 years
- Best for: coastal, salt-air, very humid environments where steel + wood fail
- Downside: limited color + texture options; brittle in extreme cold
R-value: what matters + what doesn't
- Attached garage with finished interior (drywall + heat): insulation matters. Triple-layer steel OR insulated composite is right call.
- Attached garage, unfinished: insulation helps moderate; double-layer steel is sweet spot.
- Detached garage, no climate control: insulation does nothing useful. Single-layer steel is appropriate.
- Living space above garage (bonus room, bedroom): insulation matters AND sound dampening matters. Triple-layer steel or solid wood; pair with insulated walls + ceiling above garage.
Most R-value marketing is for the door's panel + ignores: gap leakage around door, jambs, header. A high R-value door with bad weather seal = the seal dominates the energy loss.
Wind rating (coastal + tornado zones)
- Required in FL Building Code, TX coastal counties, parts of SC + GA + AL coast
- Wind ratings: PSF (pounds per square foot) static pressure (e.g., +20/-20 = standard; +50/-50 = high wind)
- Higher wind rating requires reinforcement struts + heavier door + stronger track
- 30 - 50% premium over standard residential same model
- Required for hurricane / windstorm insurance discount
Color + finish
- Factory paint: 5 - 7 year warranty (commercial paint to 20 years)
- Field-paint: most steel + composite repaintable with exterior latex
- Wood stain: refinish every 3 - 5 years
- Powder-coat (commercial): excellent durability; limited residential color match
The single most-overlooked tradeoff in door selection is WEIGHT. Heavier doors (wood, triple-layer steel, full glass) require heavier torsion springs + more powerful openers. Customer who picks a 280-lb wood door to replace a 110-lb single-layer steel needs new springs + possibly new opener - that's of "hidden" cost. Quote the SYSTEM, not the door alone. Disclose this upfront + the customer chooses with eyes open; they don't if you wait until install day.
