Adjust Garage Door Opener Travel Limits
Goal
Set the up-stop and down-stop travel limits on a residential garage door opener so the door fully opens (without slamming into the header) and fully closes (without bouncing back from over-travel into the floor). Wrong limits cause customer complaints ranging from "door won't quite close" to "opener strains every time it opens" - both fixable in 5 minutes per setting.
Prerequisites
- Step ladder (4 - 6 foot to reach the opener motor head)
- Flat screwdriver OR (newer openers) a programming-button sequence per manual
- 10 - 15 minutes
Identify the opener's adjustment method first:
- Mechanical limits (most pre-2015 openers): visible adjustment screws on the motor head, usually labeled UP and DOWN
- Electronic limits (most post-2015 openers): programmed via a sequence of button presses; consult the manual or the chart on the motor head's underside
Steps
For mechanical-limit openers:
- Identify the UP and DOWN adjustment screws. Usually on the side of the motor head, sometimes behind a label or sliding cover.
- Test the current down-limit. Use the wall button to close the door. Watch where it stops.
- Door stops 1"+ above the floor → adjust DOWN screw clockwise to increase travel
- Door slams into the floor and reverses → adjust DOWN screw counter-clockwise
- Door pulses or "bumps" the floor → safe - leave alone; that's how it's designed
- Test the current up-limit. Push UP. Watch where it stops.
- Door doesn't reach fully open (tracks visible above the top of the door) → adjust UP screw clockwise
- Door slams into the header on top → adjust UP screw counter-clockwise
- Make adjustments in quarter-turn increments. Each ¼ turn = roughly 2" of travel. Test after each adjustment; don't make multiple adjustments before testing.
- Verify safety-reverse still works after limit changes. Place a 2x4 flat on the floor under the door, send the door down via the opener. Door must reverse on contact with the 2x4.
For electronic-limit openers:
- Locate the LEARN button or LIMIT button on the motor head (varies by brand).
- Enter programming mode per the manufacturer's chart - usually a hold-and-release sequence.
- Run the door to the desired UP position with the wall button (or in newer models, by pulling/pushing the door manually with the opener disconnected via emergency release, then reconnecting).
- Press the LIMIT/LEARN button to set the UP-limit.
- Repeat for the DOWN position - run to where you want the door to stop (fully closed, no bounce).
- Cycle the door 3 times to verify the limits hold.
Verification
- Door fully opens without slamming into header
- Door fully closes onto the floor seal (no daylight visible underneath)
- Door does NOT reverse on close without obstruction
- Safety-reverse test still passes (2x4 on floor → door reverses on contact)
- Cycle 5 times to confirm no creep
Troubleshooting
- Limits drift over time: typical on mechanical-limit openers. Add to annual service checklist; re-test once a year.
- Door closes then opens slightly back up: down-limit is set fractionally too tight, opener detects "obstruction" once door is fully on the floor. Back off the down-limit by ¼ turn.
- Door won't reach down-limit at all (stops a foot up): separate problem - usually photo eye misaligned or close-force too low. See "Door Won't Close" diagnostic.
- Down-limit moves on its own each week: opener clutch slipping internally. Replace opener OR send the limit signal to a hard end-stop on the track.
After adjusting limits on any opener, ALWAYS re-test the safety reverse. A correctly-set limit can still mask a faulty safety-reverse system if the technician doesn't verify it. The 2x4 test takes 10 seconds; skipping it is what turns a routine call into a liability incident.
