Integrally Colored vs Topical Stain Decision

Why this matters

A colored concrete slab can hold its color for decades or fade visibly within five years, and the difference is almost entirely the coloring method you picked at the bid. Integral color is mixed into the concrete at the batch plant; topical stains are applied to the cured surface. Each method has a defensible application and a misuse case. Sell the wrong one and the homeowner sees the color fading at the wear paths within a few seasons; sell the right one and the slab outlasts the staining itself.

Integral color

Integral color uses iron oxide pigments (ASTM C979 compliant) dispersed throughout the entire concrete matrix. The color is the concrete, not a coating. Wear, surface grinding, and even chipping reveal the same color underneath. Standard integral color products: Davis Colors, Solomon Colors, BASF Master Builders, Butterfield Color, Increte. Available in earth-tone palette dominated by red, yellow, brown, and black iron oxides; cobalt blues and chromium greens are available but at premium cost and with UV-stability tradeoffs.

When integral color is the right call:

  • Long-life decorative work where wear and abrasion are expected: driveways, patios, commercial floor slabs.
  • Stamped concrete where surface grinding, salt scaling, or weather will erode any topical coating over years.
  • Outdoor freeze-thaw climates where surface coatings delaminate over winter cycles.
  • Projects where uniform color is required across multiple pours; the integral pigment dose can be matched batch to batch.

Limitations: integral color colors the full slab depth, which is wasteful and expensive for thick slabs (most architectural color is in the top 1/4 inch of visible thickness). The palette is limited to iron oxide tones plus a few synthetics; rich variegated effects are not achievable from integral color alone. Pigment dosage typical range is 1 to 6 percent by weight of cement, but going past 4 percent reduces strength meaningfully per ASTM C979 guidance, and beyond 6 percent is impractical.

Topical stains: acid-based reactive

Acid stains (Smith's, Kemiko, Increte, Surecrete) chemically react with the calcium hydroxide in cured concrete to form metallic salts of iron, copper, manganese, or chromium. The result is a translucent, variegated, marbled appearance that integral color cannot achieve. Colors are limited to the available metal salts (rusty tans, blue-greens, brown-blacks) but each application reads as unique because the chemistry depends on the substrate.

When acid stain is the right call:

  • Interior finished floors that get protected from weather and traffic abrasion: residential floors over slab-on-grade, retail showrooms, restaurants, commercial offices.
  • Premium decorative work where variegation and depth are required.
  • Slabs at least 28 days cured with a strong calcium hydroxide reserve (high-cement-content mixes stain richer; mixes with high fly ash or slag stain weaker).

Limitations: surface only, abrades through over years; requires sealing and periodic re-sealing (every 1 to 3 years interior, more frequent exterior); cannot stain concrete that has cured under a curing compound, has been power-troweled to a polished finish, or has been contaminated with form release, dust, or grease. Acid stain is also a real acid (typically hydrochloric or muriatic plus the salt); OSHA HAZCOM rules apply, full face shield and acid-rated gloves required.

Topical stains: water-based and dye

Water-based stains (Behr, Eagle, Concrete Color Solutions Decosil) and concrete dyes (Ameripolish SureDye, Prosoco Consolideck Color, Increte CD-Series) deposit pigment in the concrete surface without chemical reaction. Color palette is much wider than acid stain (full color wheel available), application is faster, and the result is more uniform. Water-based stains and dyes are the standard for polished concrete floors because they penetrate the densified surface a polished concrete acid stain cannot reach.

When water-based stain or dye is the right call:

  • Polished concrete floors (acid stain does not work on densified or polished surfaces).
  • Specific color matches outside the iron-oxide and metallic-salt palette.
  • Fast-track projects where the multi-day acid stain process is not in the schedule.

Limitations: still a surface treatment; surface coatings can fade with UV exposure. Dyes are not UV-stable for outdoor work unless specifically labeled UV-stable. Water-based stains penetrate less than acid stains and abrade more readily.

When to combine

Integral color plus topical stain is the premium approach for high-end decorative work. Integral color provides the base tone and color uniformity below the wear surface; topical stain or dye adds the variegation, accent color, or richer surface palette. A salt-and-pepper exposed-aggregate slab with a charcoal integral color and an acid stain over the top reads as natural stone; a polished concrete floor with a tan integral color and a brown dye over the polish reads as warm rather than washed-out. Specify both during the bid; document who is responsible for each step.

Decision matrix summary

  • Outdoor work, freeze-thaw, abrasion exposure: integral color is mandatory; topical optional for accent.
  • Indoor finished floor, premium decorative variegation: acid stain (un-polished) or water-based stain / dye (polished).
  • Fast-track or limited budget: integral color alone (broadest palette tradeoff, lowest maintenance).
  • Matching multiple slabs over years: integral color (topical applications fade differently across exposure conditions).

Substrate prep that the color depends on

Integral color requires consistent mix design across batches (cement source, water content, admixtures held constant) and consistent finishing technique (broom, trowel, or stamp; over-troweling darkens the surface). Topical stains require fully cured slab (28 days minimum), no curing compound, no power-trowel polish before stain (unless the stain is dye for a polished floor), clean substrate (acid wash and rinse for acid stains, mechanical clean for dyes). Sealing on top: solvent-based or water-based acrylic sealers for indoor; densifier plus a polish for polished work; penetrating siloxane for outdoor exposed-aggregate where the natural color is the show.
