Why this matters
Decorative concrete commands premium pricing: a standard broom-finish driveway is a modest per sq ft installed, while stamped or exposed aggregate is a modest per sq ft. A contractor who masters decorative techniques can compete in premium residential markets where standard contractors can't. The skill is real: each technique has its own materials, timing, and tools. A botched decorative pour is more visible (and harder to fix) than a botched standard one.

Stamped concrete deep dive
The most popular decorative technique:
Materials needed
- Integral color additive (mixed into concrete)
- Release color powder (broadcast on surface before stamping)
- Stamp pattern (rubber stamps available in various designs)
- Stamp release agent (liquid form sometimes)
- Stamp tamper / pounder
Procedure
- Pour and screed standard slab with integral color
- Bull float to smooth
- Broadcast release color (color contrast to integral)
- Wait for surface to be plastic-pliable (typical 15 to 60 minutes after pour)
- Position stamps; press into surface
- Tamp for full pattern impression
- Stamp adjacent pattern (overlap as designed)
- Continue across the surface
- Allow to cure
- Wash off release powder excess
- Seal
