Post-Construction Final Clean Punch List

Why this matters

The post-construction final clean is the last person on a jobsite before the certificate of occupancy walk. If the cleaning crew misses caulk smears on a window mullion, drywall mud on a baseboard return, or a film of fine dust on the top side of a kitchen cabinet, the general contractor gets the punch list back from the owner and the cleaning vendor gets the chargeback. A printed room by room punch list signed on completion stops the dispute before it starts. This reference is the line item checklist; the procedural SOP for performing the work lives separately.

When to use this list

Use on every new construction or major renovation final clean. Print one copy per room or zone. The lead cleaner checks each line as it clears and signs the bottom. The customer or general contractor countersigns at the final walk. The signed sheet stays with the job file for 3 years minimum (most builder contracts demand 1 to 3 year retention; some warranty defect claims reach back further).

Entry door and exterior

• Threshold plate vacuumed and wiped, no construction dust on the saddle
• Door slab wiped both sides, no fingerprints or installation tape residue
• Door frame and stop wiped on all four sides
• Weatherstripping in place, not pinched or torn
• Door hardware (lockset, deadbolt, viewer) wiped and operating freely
• Doorbell button and exterior sconce wiped
• Welcome mat removed if construction grade, owner mat in place if provided

Windows

• Glass cleaned both sides, no streak, no construction adhesive specks
• Sash wiped top and bottom
• Frame and stops wiped on all sides including the head jamb
• Window track vacuumed clean, no drywall dust accumulation
• Sill wiped, no caulk smears at the corners
• Weep holes clear (not painted shut, not blocked by caulk)
• Screen reinstalled if removed for paint, no tears, clipped securely
• Window stickers and tags removed, adhesive residue cleared with appropriate solvent

Walls and ceilings

• Walls dust wiped or vacuumed (drywall dust embeds into latex paint and shows under angled light)
• No spackle or joint compound smears at outlet boxes or switch plates
• No paint splatter on adjacent surfaces (trim, flooring, fixtures)
• Ceiling fan blades wiped top and bottom
• Light fixture lenses and glass clean
• Smoke and CO alarm faces wiped, batteries installed, dust covers removed per NFPA 72
• HVAC supply and return grilles wiped, no dust on the louvers
• Recessed can trims clean and seated, no smudges on the trim ring

Trim and millwork

• Baseboards wiped on top, face, and bottom edge
• Crown molding wiped (use a microfiber on an extension pole)
• Window and door casing wiped on all faces
• Stair treads and risers wiped, no construction dust at the nosing
• Stair handrail and balusters wiped
• Caulk lines inspected, smears removed
• Closet shelving and rod wiped, no installation labels remaining

Kitchen

• All cabinet doors and drawer fronts wiped exterior
• All cabinet interiors vacuumed and wiped (drywall dust gets behind every door)
• Toe kicks wiped, no debris underneath
• Countertops cleaned, no construction adhesive, no manufacturer protective film remnants
• Sink scrubbed, faucet polished, sprayer functional, no plumber putty smears
• Range top wiped, oven interior wiped, broiler pan in place if delivered
• Microwave interior and exterior wiped, turntable in place
• Dishwasher interior wiped, racks installed, kickplate clean
• Refrigerator interior wiped, doors cleaned, all packing material removed
• Range hood exterior wiped, filter installed correctly, vent path clear
• Backsplash wiped, no grout haze on tile
• Hardware (pulls, knobs) polished, no fingerprints

Bathrooms

• Vanity top wiped, edges and underside clean
• Vanity cabinet interior vacuumed and wiped
• Mirror cleaned both sides if backed, full face if surface mount
• Faucet polished, drain stopper functional, no plumber putty residue
• Sink basin scrubbed, overflow vent clean
• Toilet bowl scrubbed, seat installed, tank lid in place, supply valve packing dry
• Tub and shower walls scrubbed, no grout haze, no construction adhesive
• Shower fixtures polished, head and arm clean, diverter functional
• Shower glass cleaned both sides, hardware polished, sweep installed
• Tile and grout free of haze (use a haze remover from the tile manufacturer compatibility list)
• Caulk lines clean, no mildew (should be new caulk on a new build, must be clean)
• Towel bars, paper holder, robe hook installed and wiped
• Exhaust fan grille wiped, motor area dust free
• Floor wiped including under the toilet base

Laundry and utility

• Washer and dryer connection access clean
• Dryer vent termination clear, not crushed during install
• Utility sink scrubbed, faucet functional
• Wire shelving wiped, no installation tags
• Laundry room floor mopped, no construction debris in the corners

Garage

• Floor swept and damp mopped to remove drywall dust skim
• Garage door panels wiped both sides
• Garage door tracks and hardware free of debris
• Garage door opener photo eyes wiped, sensor lights confirmed steady
• Service door wiped, weatherstrip seated
• Wall outlets and switches wiped
• Water heater pan dry and clean if installed in garage
• HVAC equipment exterior wiped

Floors (final pass)

• Hard floor vacuumed THEN damp mopped with appropriate finish cleaner per manufacturer guidance
• Carpet vacuumed with a HEPA filter vacuum, multiple directions (see HEPA vacuum verification reference)
• Tile grout clean, no haze, no construction adhesive smears
• Floor transitions and reducers in place, no exposed nail or screw heads
• Floor registers seated, clean, dampers operational

Final walk verification

• All construction tape, labels, and stickers removed
• All manufacturer protective films pulled (countertops, appliances, glass)
• All boxes, packing material, and construction debris removed from site
• HVAC filter installed, manufacturer plastic removed
• All exterior light bulbs verified operational
• All interior light bulbs verified operational
• Smoke and CO alarms verified armed per NFPA 72
• Photo documentation taken of every room
• Punch list signed by lead cleaner
• Punch list countersigned by general contractor or owner
