Carpet Wicking Versus Resoiling Decision Tree

Why this matters

A spot that reappears within 7 days of a hot-water-extraction job has one of two causes - the soil migrated up from a saturated pad (wicking) or detergent residue is attracting fresh soil (resoiling) - and the customer cannot tell them apart. The technician who returns and re-cleans the same way produces a worse callback. Wicking is a deep-extraction or dry-time problem; resoiling is chemistry and rinse. They fix in opposite directions: more aggressive extraction for wicking, gentler chemistry for resoiling.

Symptom presentation

  • Wicking: the original spot reappears in roughly original size and position, often faded, sometimes with a darker extraction ring. Timeline 12-72 hours after dry.
  • Resoiling: a faintly darker patch in traffic areas (in front of the chair, coffee table) growing over weeks. Timeline 7-30+ days.
  • Returning stain: the original stain was never fully extracted. Photograph the recovery tank from the original job.

Pre-existing condition matters. Pull pre-job inspection photos.

Quick checks at the spot

  • Damp white towel on the spot. Heavy brown transfer = wicking; light = returning-stain.
  • Fiber pH at spot vs unaffected area. Within half a point = not residue. Higher = alkaline residue (resoiling); lower = acid rinse residue.
  • Cleaning history: multiple back-to-back HWE jobs without acid rinse routinely create resoiling.

Branch A - Wicking (60 percent of recurring spots)

Why it happens:

  • The pad under the carpet was saturated during the clean and the wand extracted only the carpet face. As the carpet dries, water from the pad rises through the carpet by capillary action and brings dissolved soil from the pad up to the visible pile.
  • High-flow wand technique with insufficient dry strokes leaves too much rinse in the pad.
  • Pre-existing pet urine, beverage spills, or other soil long since dried into the pad becomes mobile when wetted and wicks visibly on dry.
  • Heavy or dense carpet construction wicks more than open-pile commercial carpet because capillary action is stronger in tighter geometry.

Diagnosis specifics:

  • Spot reappears in roughly the same shape and position as the original.
  • A small area of affected carpet, lifted at a corner, shows damp pad below.
  • White-towel transfer test pulls deep brown - not the gray of resoiling.

Remediation sequence:

  1. Subsurface extraction tool over the affected area. The tool extracts pad moisture and dissolved soil through the carpet face without re-wetting the pad significantly. A handheld water-claw or equivalent tool.
  2. After subsurface extraction, dry strokes only with the wand, no rinse.
  3. Air movers placed directly on the spot, dry under 6 hours.
  4. Apply a small amount of acid rinse to neutralize any residual cleaning chemistry, extract dry.
  5. If wicking persists after one treatment, the pad is saturated with pre-existing contamination that warrants pad replacement on the affected area - flood-cut the carpet up at the spot, replace pad, re-tack.

For pet-urine wicking specifically, the urine salts in the pad are hygroscopic and will wick back every time the carpet is cleaned until the pad is replaced or the urine source is enzymatically broken down. Educate the customer.

Branch B - Resoiling (30 percent of recurring spots)

Why it happens:

  • Cleaning detergent residue left in the carpet fiber attracts oily soil from foot traffic. The residue acts as a soil magnet.
  • High-pH pre-spray was not rinsed neutral. Residual surfactant stays in the pile.
  • Carpet protector (Scotchgard, fluoropolymer) was stripped by aggressive cleaning chemistry and not reapplied; soil now adheres faster than before.
  • Multiple back-to-back cleanings without acid rinse compound the residue.

Diagnosis specifics:

  • Spot reappears in high-traffic patterns (in front of the couch, the chair, the bed) not in the original spot pattern.
  • Spot grows over weeks rather than appearing fully formed in 24-72 hours.
  • Fiber pH high (8.5+) on the affected area.
  • Bristle test: rub the affected fiber between fingers, feel for tackiness or stiff feel of residue.

Remediation sequence:

  1. Acid rinse the entire affected area, not just the visible spots. Citric acid based fiber rinse, pH 4.0-5.0.
  2. Hot rinse extraction with fresh water until recovered water tests neutral.
  3. Re-apply carpet protector if the customer's history shows protector originally applied.
  4. Educate customer on cleaning intervals and avoid over-cleaning. A carpet does not need monthly HWE.

Branch C - Returning stain (10 percent of recurring spots)

The original spot was never fully extracted; it dried looking gone and then darkened back as residual chromophores oxidized.

Diagnosis:

  • Spot reappears in exact original shape and position.
  • White-towel transfer test pulls the same color as the original stain.
  • pH on the spot does not differ from unaffected.

Remediation:

  • Identify the original stain type. Beverage stains call for tannin spotter. Synthetic dyes from candy or art supplies call for dye-stain protocol with reducing agent. Protein stains from blood or food call for enzyme treatment.

Confirming the diagnosis

Three confirmations:

  • White-towel transfer photographed before any remediation.
  • Fiber pH photographed at the spot and at an unaffected reference.
  • Customer interview confirming time-from-clean to spot-reappearance and any new household activity in the area.

A wicking call mis-fixed as a resoiling call (re-extract with acid rinse only) will wick back again because the pad is still saturated. A resoiling call mis-fixed as a wicking call (subsurface extraction without acid rinse) leaves the residue in place and accelerates the next resoil.

Remediation summary

  • Wicking: subsurface extraction, fast dry, neutralize. Pad replacement if persistent.
  • Resoiling: acid rinse the area, fresh-water extraction to neutral, reapply protector if appropriate.
  • Returning stain: identify chromophore, apply correct chemistry per S100, neutralize, rinse, dry.

After any remediation, fan-and-dry within 6 hours and inspect at 72 hours and 7 days. Sign off on the callback only after the 7-day inspection.

Customer education

A homeowner whose carpet wicks repeatedly needs to understand the cause is pad contamination, not technician fault. A homeowner whose carpet resoils needs less aggressive chemistry, longer intervals, and reapplied protector. The trade earns the relationship by explaining the difference.
