Truck-Mount vs Portable Extraction CFM and Lift Math
Why this matters
The number one cause of slow dry times and customer callbacks for "carpet feels stiff" is under-recovered water, not under-cleaned soil. Vacuum recovery is a math problem: cubic feet per minute of airflow plus inches of water lift, minus the friction loss in your hose run. Operators who size by horsepower or by what the next van over uses end up with mismatched systems that either cannot pull water back through 100 feet of hose or burn money on capacity they never use. This reference puts the numbers on paper.
Two numbers that define vacuum performance
CFM (cubic feet per minute). Volume of air moved through the wand. Drives bulk water lift and the speed of the dry pass. Open port CFM at the blower is the spec the manufacturer prints; CFM at the wand is always lower because hose, valves, and waste tank inlet add restriction.
Water lift (inches of water column). Maximum static suction the blower can develop against a sealed port. Drives the ability to pull water vertically from carpet pile and against a long hose run. Open port water lift is the manufacturer spec; sealed lift at the wand is lower for the same restriction reasons.
You need both. High CFM with low lift dries fast but leaves water in dense pile. High lift with low CFM lifts deep but recovers slowly. Carpet wand cleaning calls for a balance, typically biased toward CFM for residential and toward lift for commercial glue down where the pile is shallow but the soil is tightly bound.

These ranges are open port at the blower. Subtract heavily for what reaches the wand.
Hose friction loss
Every foot of vacuum hose adds restriction. The size of the hose matters more than the length.
- 1.5 inch ID hose loses roughly 6 to 8 inches of water lift per 25 ft at typical CFM
- 2 inch ID hose loses roughly 2 to 3 inches per 25 ft at typical CFM
- 2.5 inch ID hose (truck mount standard) loses roughly 1 inch per 25 ft
A portable rated at 140 inches open lift running 100 ft of 1.5 inch hose into a third floor walk up is delivering somewhere around 90 inches at the wand, sometimes less if any fittings or quick disconnects add restriction. That is still adequate for residential cleaning if CFM is also healthy, but it explains why the operator reports slow recovery on long runs.
Every 90 degree elbow at a quick disconnect adds the equivalent of 5 to 10 ft of straight hose. Every kink in the hose during operation doubles the loss in that section.
Solution recovery vs dry passes
A wet pass at 1 second per linear foot at 250 psi puts roughly 0.5 to 0.8 gallons of solution per minute into the carpet depending on jet count and orifice size. A dry pass should recover most of that volume. The ratio of solution put down to solution recovered (across the full clean) is the cleaning operator's most important quality metric. Targets:
- Residential nylon plush, healthy truck mount: 85 to 95% recovery after 2 dry passes
- Residential nylon plush, healthy portable on 50 ft of 2 inch hose: 75 to 85%
- Commercial loop glue down: 80 to 90% with proper wand technique
- Wool: 90%+ targeted, lower flow and more dry passes (wool is sensitive to over wet)
Below 70% recovery, carpet stays wet long enough to wick stains from substrate, encourage microbial growth, and trigger customer callbacks.
Sizing decision criteria
- Average hose run length. Routine ground floor residential: under 75 ft, portable acceptable. Routine commercial, multi story, or distant parking: truck mount essential.
- Daily production target. Under 1,500 sq ft per day: portable workable. 1,500 to 4,000 sq ft per day: high end portable or entry truck mount. Over 4,000 sq ft per day: truck mount essential.
- Restoration work. Water damage extraction CFM matters most for sheet extraction (under 5 minutes per 100 sq ft of soaked pad with truck mount, often 20+ minutes with portable). Restoration without truck mount class CFM is operator hours bleeding into the loss.
- Climate. Humid southern markets recover slower from the carpet drying perspective. CFM bias matters more.
- Hose storage. Portable equipment lives in the back of the van; the operator has to carry the hose to the door and run it. Truck mount stays in the van with the hose reel and the operator pulls one hose into the structure. Operator fatigue at end of day affects everything.
Verification
Measure your system, do not trust the brochure.
- Open port CFM and lift testing requires a flow bench, typically only done by the manufacturer or a service center.
- Field verification: connect a magnehelic gauge to the wand inlet and read lift under typical operating conditions. Document the reading per van, per hose configuration, per quarter. Track over time. A drop of 20% or more flags a blower seal, a worn hose, or a tank gasket leak.
- Solution recovery is measurable on every job: gallons in (truck mount fresh tank delta), gallons out (waste tank delta), ratio.
Common myths
- "More horsepower means more suction." Engine HP drives blower RPM, which drives CFM. Lift is mostly a function of blower design and stage count.
- "Longer hose is fine if I oversize the blower." Up to a point, but you cannot fix a long thin hose with more power; you fix it with bigger hose.
- "Heat is what cleans, vacuum is just water removal." Heat aids chemistry, but mechanical agitation plus vacuum recovery removes the suspended soil. All three legs of the cleaning stool matter.
