Carpet Spot Treatment Protocol

Goal

Treat individual stains on residential carpet - between regular cleanings OR as part of standard service when stains are flagged. Right treatment depends on the stain type; wrong treatment sets the stain permanently. This protocol is the field-card for identifying common stains + matching them to chemistry.

Prerequisites

  • Spotting kit with: alkaline cleaner, solvent (P.O.G. or volatile dry solvent), enzyme cleaner, oxidizing reducer (for color-removal needs), tannin remover, gum remover
  • White microfiber towels (white only - colored may bleed)
  • Bone scraper or spoon for solid debris
  • Spotting brush (soft to medium)
  • Hand-pump sprayer
  • 5 - 15 minutes per spot

Steps

  1. Identify the stain before treatment. Wrong identification + wrong chemistry = stain permanently set:
  • Water-soluble (coffee, tea, soda, juice, wine): use water-based cleaner first; tannin remover if persistent
  • Oil-based (cooking oil, grease, makeup, lotion): solvent first; THEN water-based to remove residue
  • Protein-based (food, blood, urine, vomit, dairy): enzyme cleaner
  • Bleach / dye damage: NOT a stain - it's missing color; carpet dyeing service
  • Asphalt / tar: heavy solvent (citrus-based safer than chlorinated)
  • Gum: freeze + scrape; gum remover spray for residue
  • Old set stains: oxidizing reducer (peroxide-based)
  1. Pre-treatment scrape. Solid debris off first. Use bone scraper or spoon. Lift up, not back and forth (back-and-forth grinds the stain in).
  2. Test the cleaner. Wet a hidden corner of carpet (inside closet); apply 1 drop of cleaner; blot. Watch for color transfer onto the white towel. Color transfer = carpet dye is unstable; don't use that chemistry on a visible area.
  3. Apply cleaner to a white towel, NOT directly to the carpet. Saves chemistry, reduces over-saturation. Some stains warrant direct application; most don't.
  4. Blot from the outside of the stain inward. Working outside-in prevents spreading the stain.
  5. Blot, don't rub. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the fibers + may damage the pile.
  6. Repeat with fresh towel surfaces. Use fresh white towel area for each blot; color transfer onto the towel proves the stain is lifting.
  7. For persistent stains: switch chemistry. Water-soluble stuck โ†’ try tannin remover. Oil stuck โ†’ try fresh solvent. Old set stain โ†’ try oxidizing reducer (test first).
  8. Final rinse with plain water + clean towel. Removes chemistry residue (residue attracts dirt; un-rinsed spot becomes a NEW spot in 30 days).
  9. Block fibers up. Stand the pile up with a brush; let air-dry. Don't leave a damp wet spot - covers can cause water marks; air-dry is better.

Verification

  • Visible stain reduction (often 80 %+ removal, not always 100 %)
  • No chemistry residue (run a finger across; no tacky feel)
  • Pile fibers blocked back up
  • Customer informed of any residual that may "wick back" on the next humid day

Troubleshooting

  • Stain reappears after dry (wicking): the stain has penetrated to the pad and is wicking back to the surface. Sub-surface extraction needed (Water Claw); see Pet Stain & Odor Remediation HowTo.
  • Color removed AT the stain: dye-fast issue OR aggressive oxidizer used. Carpet dyeing service is the fix.
  • Browning around the treated area: cellulosic browning from over-wetting + alkaline residue. Acid rinse on the area + re-extract.
  • Stain spreads outward (donut): applied too much chemistry + blotted outward instead of inward. Re-treat working inward only.

Hydrogen peroxide-based oxidizers WILL remove carpet color, not just the stain. Always test in a hidden area first AND limit application to spot size only. The "I used peroxide and now there's a white spot" customer call is one of the worst - peroxide-induced color loss is permanent without a dye job.
