Rust Versus Furniture Stain Decision Tree
Why this matters
A reddish-brown spot next to where a chair leg, metal stand, or wood furniture foot sat has two distinct causes and opposite remediation paths. Rust from a corroded metal foot needs an acid reducer (oxalic or non-HF formulations); furniture dye bleed from a wood foot or stained leather pad needs a reducing agent (sodium hydrosulfite class). Apply rust treatment to a dye stain and the chromophore sets harder; apply dye treatment to rust and the iron stays in the fiber. Both stains look orange-brown and sit under furniture - misdiagnosis is the trade's high-rate error.
Symptom presentation
- Rust is iron oxide from a corroded metal surface. Orange to red-brown, crisp edge, often a darker center. Hard and slightly gritty when dry.
- Furniture dye bleed is chromophore from a wood finish or leather pad wet-transferred onto carpet. Common after steam clean or spill. Softer edges, no grit, sometimes a ring pattern.
- Coffee/tannin masquerades as both - tannin spotter lifts it but not rust or dye.
- Pre-existing pet urine can look orange-brown after oxidation. UV lamp rules in or out.
Quick checks before remediation
- Brush dry with stiff bristle. Rust may flake off as iron-oxide particulate; dye does not.
- Damp white towel on the spot. Furniture dye sometimes transfers; rust rarely does.
- pH the spot. Both rust and dye are neutral on fiber. This rules out alkaline residue.
- Inspect the furniture foot. Rusted glide confirms rust; wood foot with water mark confirms dye.
Photograph the spot, the furniture underside, and the position before treatment.
Branch A - Rust stain confirmed
Iron oxide in the carpet fiber. Standard remediation is a rust spotter containing oxalic acid (the historical class) or a non-HF rust remover compound (newer chemistries that achieve the same effect without the hazard of hydrofluoric-acid-containing products).
Sequence:
- Apply rust spotter per label dwell time, typically 5-15 minutes.
- Agitate gently with a soft brush. Do not scrub aggressively - rust spotters can damage fiber dye if over-worked.
- Extract with cool fresh water, repeating the application if a residual cast remains.
- Neutralize the area with a mild alkaline rinse (most rust spotters are strongly acidic; the alkaline rinse brings fiber pH back to 6.5-7.5).
- Speed-dry.
- After dry, inspect under daylight. A second application can be made if residual remains and fiber condition is stable.
Notes:
- Wool carpet tolerates oxalic acid poorly. Use a wool-safe rust remover and test in an inconspicuous area first.
- Olefin carpet tolerates rust spotters well; nylon is the most forgiving fiber.
- Hydrofluoric-acid-containing rust spotters (older trade products) are restricted in many jurisdictions and have serious operator safety implications. The modern trade should not be using HF-containing chemistry; non-HF rust spotters are readily available.
Branch B - Furniture-dye bleed confirmed
The chromophore is a dye, not a metal oxide. Standard remediation is a reducing agent - sodium hydrosulfite is the historical class, applied as a powder mixed into hot water at the time of use.
Sequence:
- Mix the reducing agent powder into very hot water (160-180 F) per the label. Apply immediately - the reducer has a short pot life.
- Apply to the spot with a clean white absorbent towel laid over the area and pressed in (the indirect-application method protects fiber dye from over-exposure).
- Dwell time per label, typically 5-10 minutes.
- Lift the towel, inspect, repeat if residual remains.
- Extract with cool fresh water.
- Acid rinse to neutralize.
- Speed-dry.
Notes:
- Sodium hydrosulfite is also a fiber-dye reducer; it can strip the carpet's own color. The indirect-application method (through a towel) and the short dwell time are protective.
- Wool tolerates reducing agents poorly; wool-specific dye-stain protocols use lower-strength reducers and tighter time control.
- A test patch in an inconspicuous area is mandatory before treating a visible spot.
Branch C - Identity uncertain
If the brush-and-towel tests do not produce a clear answer, treat as the less aggressive case first.
Sequence:
- Apply a tannin spotter to rule out coffee/tea/wine. Tannin spotters are mildly acidic and will not harm fiber. If the stain lifts, it was tannin, not rust or dye.
- If tannin spotter fails, try the rust spotter (oxalic acid is less aggressive on fiber dye than sodium hydrosulfite reducer).
- If rust spotter fails, then apply the reducing-agent treatment for furniture-dye bleed.
- Between each step, rinse and neutralize the area before applying the next chemistry. Layering opposing chemistries (acid then reducer) without rinse can produce uncontrolled reactions.
Confirming the diagnosis
Three artifacts on the inspection record:
- Photograph of the spot before treatment.
- Photograph of the furniture foot or contact source that sat over the spot.
- Photograph of the spot after treatment.
A successful identification produces a clean removal in 1-2 treatment cycles. A misidentification produces no change in the spot, a set chromophore, or a bleached-out patch where the carpet dye was stripped. Stop after one failed application and re-diagnose before continuing.
Rust-spotter chemistries and reducing agents are corrosive and pose inhalation and skin-contact hazards. Per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1200 HAZCOM, the SDS for each product must be on the truck and the operator must use the PPE specified - typically chemical-resistant nitrile gloves, eye protection, and adequate ventilation. Do not mix chemistries in a single container.
Remediation summary
- Rust confirmed: oxalic-acid or non-HF rust spotter, neutralize, rinse, dry. Address the rusted furniture foot or glide to prevent recurrence.
- Furniture dye confirmed: sodium hydrosulfite or equivalent reducer applied through a towel, neutralize, rinse, dry.
- Identity uncertain: tannin first, rust second, reducer third, rinsing between each.
After any treatment, check at 72 hours. Some rust spots have residual iron in the pad below the carpet face that wicks back; subsurface extraction at the original treatment is a preventive step that pays off in zero callbacks.
Customer education
The customer who put a metal plant stand on a carpet and then watered the plant created the rust spot through their own activity. The customer who let a wet rug pad transfer dye through their carpet did the same. The technician's job is to remove the stain and educate the customer to use felt glides under metal furniture and a moisture barrier under furniture-pad-on-carpet installations. A repeat stain in the same spot in a year means the source was not addressed.
