Prochem Everest 650 Truck-Mount Preventive Maintenance SOP
Why this matters
The Prochem Everest 650 is one of the most common slide-in truck mounts in residential and light-commercial hot-water-extraction work. It pairs a Ford or GM industrial gas engine with a positive-displacement vacuum blower (typically a Sutorbilt or Roots 4M frame), a high-pressure plunger pump, and a heat exchanger that lifts solution temperature to 230 degrees F at the wand. A neglected Everest 650 fails in three predictable ways: belt-driven blower seizes from oil-starved bearings, plunger pump cups fail and pressure drops to under 200 psi, and the heat-exchanger loop fills with mineral scale and the wand temperature falls below the working range. Each of those failures takes the truck out of service for two to four days at parts-and-labor cost that erases the margin on a quarter. A disciplined PM cadence keeps the unit running at the manufacturer specifications and extends component life two to three times beyond the run-it-until-it-breaks pattern.
Daily pre-job inspection
The tech performs this before the first job of the day. Tools required: a flashlight, the unit's tool kit.
- Walk the van. Look for fluid leaks under the truck-mount frame. Engine oil drips indicate a valve cover gasket or rear main seal. Coolant drips indicate a heat-exchanger or water-pump leak. Solution-line drips indicate a chemical-feed loose fitting.
- Engine oil dipstick. Cold-check before start. Top up with the engine OEM-specified oil grade if at or below the low mark. Note: the Everest 650 engine sees high duty cycle; oil consumption between PM intervals is normal up to about 1 quart per 50 hours.
- Coolant level in the engine and in the heat-exchanger loop. Both must be at the cold-fill line. Low coolant in the heat-exchanger loop means a slow scale-related corrosion leak; pressure-test if level drops twice in a week.
- Vacuum-blower oil sight glass. The blower oil reservoir must read at the full-cold line. A low reservoir is the early warning of an imminent blower seizure.
- Chemical jug level. Confirm chemical, defoamer, and rinse-additive levels for the route.
- Hose connections at the reel. Hand-snug both vacuum and solution couplers. A solution coupler loose at the reel sprays the customer's house when the wand is up high.
- Filter screen at the water-supply inlet. Pull, rinse if visibly fouled, reinstall.
Note the readings in the unit log. Prochem service warranty requires daily log entries for warranty claims.
50-hour PM (about weekly on full-time routes)
Engine and blower-oil service. PPE: nitrile gloves, safety glasses.
- Hot oil-and-filter change on the engine. Run the engine 5 minutes to warm the oil, shut down, lock out, drain, replace filter, refill to the dipstick high mark with the OEM-specified oil and weight.
- Replace the engine air filter if mileage or hours indicate. Inspect for shop-rag debris in the airbox; intake debris destroys an industrial engine inside an hour.
- Vacuum-blower oil change. The Sutorbilt or Roots blower on the Everest 650 takes about 1 pint of ISO 100 non-detergent blower oil in each end cover. Drain at the bottom plug, refill at the sight-glass full-cold line. Do not overfill; excess oil migrates past the seal and into the vacuum stream where it ends up on the customer's carpet.
- Inspect drive belts. The blower belt is the most highly loaded. Tension by deflection: 0.25 to 0.5 inch deflection at midspan under finger pressure. Glazed or cracked belt is a replace.
- Inspect the high-pressure solution pump. Cycle the unit at full pressure (typically 500 psi for residential, 800-1,200 psi for tile-and-grout in upgraded units). Listen for cavitation; pump noise that rises and falls indicates air intake at a suction fitting.
- Clean the water inlet filter and the solution-pump inlet strainer.
- Inspect spark plug wires, coil packs, and battery terminals. A weak start in cold weather is the leading-edge indicator of a marginal battery.
250-hour PM (about monthly)
Heat exchanger and pump service.
- Descale the heat exchanger. The Everest 650 heat exchanger sees city-water hardness on every job. Scale accumulates as a thin glass layer inside the exchanger tubes that reduces heat-transfer coefficient and drops wand temperature. Use a citric-acid-based scale remover (Prochem sells one, third parties are equivalent) at the dose on the label. Run the descale cycle through the exchanger and out a return line; do not run scale remover through the carpet. Rinse with clean water until effluent pH neutralizes.
- Function-test the high-limit thermostat. The exchanger has a high-temperature cutout. Disable the burner momentarily, verify the cutout opens at the rated temperature, restore.
- Inspect the plunger pump cups. Pull the pump head, inspect the cups (typically nitrile or polyurethane). A torn or compression-set cup is the leading cause of pressure loss. Replace the cup kit at signs of wear.
- Inspect the unloader valve. The unloader bypasses solution back to the tank when the wand trigger is released. A weeping unloader cycles the pump unnecessarily and bleeds heat off the exchanger. Replace the seat and seal at signs of weep.
- Vacuum-relief valve inspection. The relief opens at the blower's rated vacuum (typically 14 inHg on a 4M blower). A relief that opens early throws blower oil mist on every job; one that fails to open in a hose-clog condition destroys the blower.
1,000-hour or annual PM
Major. Often done by an authorized Prochem service tech for warranty.
- Replace plunger pump cups as a matched set regardless of visible wear. Compression set develops uniformly across the set, and a matched-set replacement preserves pressure balance.
- Replace the blower belt. Belts older than 12 months glaze even when they look intact, and the time-to-failure on a glazed belt is shorter than the schedule between PMs.
- Replace the engine fuel filter and check the fuel pressure.
- Inspect the heat-exchanger tubes for corrosion. A heavily corroded tube bundle is a major-cost replacement; some units run a sacrificial anode in the loop. Replace the anode at every annual.
- Replace the vacuum-relief valve diaphragm.
- Pressure-test the chemical lines. A leak at a chemical fitting on a hot day vaporizes the chemical into the customer's house.
- Replace any rotted hose. Rule of thumb: any solution or recovery hose more than 5 years old gets replaced regardless of visible condition.
- Document the PM in the equipment log. Prochem and IICRC warranty cases turn on the documentation; an undocumented PM is a denied claim.
