Hand-Knotted Oriental Rug Specialty Cleaning
Purpose
Define the specialty cleaning protocol for hand-knotted oriental + Persian + tribal area rugs. Customer-owned hand-knotted rugs are typically + assets. Pricing. This is delicate work - wrong chemistry destroys the dye; aggressive water destroys the foundation; flat drying destroys the wool pile. Specialists who can do this work correctly charge premium + have multi-month backlogs.
Scope
Applies to:
- Hand-knotted oriental rugs (Persian, Turkish, Caucasian, Central Asian, Chinese, Indian, Pakistani)
- Hand-tufted rugs (NOT knotted but require special care - see notes below)
- Antique tribal rugs (Kilim, Soumak, flatweave) - additional precautions
- Decorative + collectible textiles up to standard rug sizes
Excludes:
- Antique pre-1900 museum-quality (conservator referral)
- Silk rugs (specialty even within oriental rug work; some shops refuse)
- Severely damaged (foundation rot, extensive moth damage) - refer to weaver
- Tibetan + monastery rugs with religious significance + ceremonial context
Pre-cleaning inspection (mandatory; 20 - 30 minutes)
- Photograph entire rug + close-ups of damage, stains, color variations
- Construction identification:
- Hand-knotted: tied knots visible on back; knot count varies 50 - 1,000 per sq inch
- Hand-tufted: looped pile glued to foundation with latex backing (very different cleaning protocol)
- Machine-made: uniform knots, latex backing, often labeled
- Fiber test:
- Wool: smell test (burning hair), ash crumbles
- Silk: shiny luster, very fine knot, burns to ball
- Cotton: soft cellulose; usually foundation, not pile
- Dye stability test at multiple locations + colors:
- Wet white cloth pressed firmly into pile
- Hold 30 seconds
- Any color transfer = dye-unstable; adjust process
- Red + indigo + brown most likely to bleed
- Foundation inspection: cotton (white, soft) vs wool (more elastic, off-white); check for dry rot, moth damage, fringe wear
- Customer briefing on findings - written notes; customer signs intake acknowledgment of:
- Color-loss risk on dye-unstable areas
- Possible minor shrinkage
- Foundation repair NOT included; quote separately
- Fringe cleaning approach + any expected change
Cleaning protocol (3 - 5 day in-plant work)
Step 1: Dusting (the most important step; 15 - 30 minutes)
- Hand-shake first to remove loose surface debris
- Rug-duster machine OR hanging + striking with broom (traditional method, gentler)
- Remove dirt + accumulated dry soil; rug should drop noticeably less debris before water touches it
- Hand-knotted rugs trap lots of soil at the base of pile + foundation; thorough dusting is non-negotiable
Step 2: Spot-treat any obvious stains
- Test treatment in inconspicuous area first
- Use chemistry matched to fiber + stain
- DO NOT use bleach, alkaline, or oxidizers on hand-knotted rugs without expert evaluation
Step 3: Pre-wash + dye fixative
- Apply dye-fixative solution where dye-test showed instability
- Mild acetic acid (white vinegar) rinse or commercial fixative
- Allow 10 - 30 minutes for fixative to set
Step 4: Wash
Hand-wash (preferred for valuable pieces)
- Lay rug face-up on wash floor
- Soak pile with cold or tepid water (NEVER hot - protein damage)
- Apply pH 5 - 7 (acid-side) wool-safe cleaner
- Hand-brush GENTLY in direction of pile with soft brush
- Multiple cold-water rinses
- Continuous monitoring for dye bleed; stop + acid-rinse if bleed appears
Wash pit submersion (only for verified-stable rugs)
- Lay rug in shallow pit with circulating cold water
- Add wool-safe cleaner
- 15 - 30 minute soak with periodic agitation
- Drain + multiple clean rinses
Step 5: Final rinse
- Clean water until run-off is clear
- Final rinse with weak acetic acid (1 cup vinegar per 5 gallons water) - sets dyes + balances pH
- Squeegee or roll water OUT in direction of pile
Step 6: Extract (gentle)
- Hand-roll OR very gentle squeegee
- Centrifuge IF available + IF rug is centrifuge-safe (some hand-knotted rugs are NOT centrifuge-safe - confirm with construction)
- Target: 30 - 40% moisture
Step 7: Dry
- Lay flat OR vertical on rack
- Climate-controlled room: 65 - 75°F, 30 - 45% RH
- Air movers below + above (not direct blast on pile)
- Flip + rotate every 4 - 8 hours
- Total dry: 2 - 5 days depending on size + construction
- Target <10% moisture before any finishing
Step 8: Finishing
- Vacuum gently (no beater bar)
- Comb pile to uniform direction
- Trim any frayed fringe carefully (NEVER cut into knots)
- Fringe wash: separate clean of fringe with mild soap + brush
- Inspect; document final state
Hand-tufted rugs
Look like hand-knotted but have glued latex backing. Water breaks the latex.
- Don't submerge; don't truck-mount extract
- Surface clean only: hand-brush + minimal water + immediate extract
- 5 - 10 year lifespan; not multi-generational
Antique + tribal rugs
- Older dyes (madder + indigo + cochineal) bleed more
- Foundation weakened by age; gentle handling
- Refer pre-1900 to conservator
Insurance + chain of custody
- High-value rugs require declared value + appraisal documentation
- In-plant insurance should cover stated value of items in care
- Multiple-photo chain of custody at intake, in-plant, return
- Customer signs intake acknowledging the cleaning is professional service + that minor color-loss is possible despite best practices
The single most-important risk-management practice in oriental rug specialty cleaning is the CUSTOMER INTAKE CONVERSATION. Many customers don't know their rug is hand-tufted vs hand-knotted (selling agents oversell); many don't know dye is unstable; many expect the rug to look "new." Walk through the inspection findings + manage expectations IN WRITING before the work begins. Customer who signs an honest intake form rarely complains about minor color change; customer surprised at color change has a dispute.
