Carpet Fiber Identification & Care

Overview

Different carpet fibers require different cleaning approaches. Wrong chemistry on the wrong fiber = damaged carpet + customer dispute. This is the in-truck identification + care guide.

Identification Tests

Burn test (single fiber test):

  • Wool: smells like burning hair; black ash; self-extinguishes
  • Nylon: smells like celery; melts; black ash; self-extinguishes
  • Polyester: smells sweet; melts; harder bead
  • Olefin: smells like candles; melts very easily; oily smoke
  • Acrylic: acrid smell; black smoke; melts + drips
  • Cotton (rug): smells like paper; ash continues to glow

Visual test:

  • Wool: matte finish, natural variation in fiber thickness
  • Synthetic: uniform appearance; often shiny
  • Natural plant fibers: distinct ridges + slightly irregular

Chemical test:

  • Bleach drop: wool dissolves; synthetic doesn't
  • Alkali drop: wool browns; synthetic unaffected

Care + Cleaning per Fiber

Nylon (most common residential):

  • Hot water extraction OK
  • Alkaline + acidic cleaners both OK
  • High heat OK
  • Most stain treatments OK

Polyester:

  • Hot water extraction OK
  • Lower heat preferred
  • Stain-resistant; usually responds to standard cleaning
  • Less durable than nylon; recover may take longer

Olefin:

  • Hot water extraction OK BUT lower heat
  • Solvent-friendly (oil-based stains lift well)
  • DON'T use high heat - melts at relatively low temperatures
  • Crushes more permanently than nylon

Wool (REQUIRES SPECIAL CARE):

  • Neutral pH cleaners ONLY (5.5 - 7.5)
  • NO alkaline pre-sprays
  • Lower heat (cooler water extraction)
  • Specific wool-rated detergents (Bridgepoint Wool Renew or similar)
  • Acid rinse to maintain pH balance
  • Air-dry; never use high heat

Acrylic:

  • Mild chemistry
  • Lower heat
  • Treat similar to wool - gentle approach

Triexta:

  • Forgiving fiber
  • Standard cleaning approach works
  • Excellent stain resistance built-in

Safety

Wool is the highest-risk fiber for cleaner damage. ALWAYS verify the carpet is NOT wool before applying alkaline pre-spray. Wool fibers + alkaline pre-spray = cellulosic browning within hours, visible to the customer the next day, IRREVERSIBLE. The burn-test (single fiber) takes 5 seconds + prevents a customer-relationship-ending mistake.
