Whirlpool Cabrio Top-Load Washer Bearing Kit Service
Why this matters
Whirlpool Cabrio and the platform siblings (Kenmore Oasis, Maytag Bravos, certain Amana XL models) share a vertical-modular washer (VMW) chassis with a sealed outer tub bearing pressed into the tub support. When the bearing fails the customer reports a jet-engine howl during spin and water leaking down the rear of the cabinet. A bearing kit is a viable repair only on relatively young units; many shops have a hard rule that beyond a chassis-specific age threshold the repair is uneconomical and the right call is replacement. This article walks the procedure for shops that do offer the rebuild.
Confirm the failure mode before quoting
Before recommending a bearing kit, rule out the cheaper failures:
- Drive system: pull the impeller, inspect the splines. Worn splines mimic bearing roar.
- Suspension rods: a failed suspension lets the basket walk into the outer tub during spin; the contact sounds like a bearing.
- Shipping bolts: a unit moved without service bolts can have a wedged drive shaft.
The bearing diagnosis is confirmed when the basket has visible radial play with the impeller out and you can feel rough rotation by hand on the drive shaft from below.
Parts list for the rebuild
The OEM "tub bearing kit" includes the outer tub seal, the upper and lower bearings, and the tub support. The tub support is included because the bearings are press-fit and Whirlpool tooling for in-place bearing extraction is generally not available outside the factory. Plan on full tub-support replacement.
You will also need:
- New spanner nut and washer (these are torque-to-yield on this platform; reuse is not recommended)
- Replacement drive shaft seal
- Outer tub if it shows visible scoring at the seal land (inspect during teardown)
- Loctite per the service manual at indicated points (do not substitute)
Tools
- Spanner wrench sized to the chassis (W10447783 or chassis-equivalent)
- Drive-shaft puller appropriate to the Cabrio platform
- Torque wrench reaching the manual-specified value for the drive nut
- Standard appliance hand tools
Procedure
- Lock out at the breaker and water supplies. Drain the tub fully via the pump-out routine or by pulling the drain hose.
- Remove the top panel by releasing the front clips and lifting the rear of the top free of the cabinet.
- Remove the basket. Pull the fabric softener dispenser cap, then use the spanner wrench to break the drive nut loose. Lift the basket out vertically; on this platform the basket can be heavy and awkward, plan accordingly.
- Remove the outer tub. Disconnect the pressure sensor hose, the drain hose, and any wiring at the outer-tub-mounted components. Release the suspension rod clips at the top. Lift the outer tub out of the cabinet and set it on a clean work surface inverted (basket-opening down).
- From the bottom of the outer tub, remove the drive shaft seal and the tub-support fasteners. The tub support carries the bearings and presses into the outer tub.
- Replace the tub support as an assembly. Do not attempt to press individual bearings into a salvaged tub support without the factory tooling.
- Install the new shaft seal per the service manual; orientation matters and a backward seal will leak immediately.
- Reassemble in reverse order. Torque the drive nut to the chassis-specified value with a calibrated torque wrench; this is not a feel-it-tight repair.
- Restore power and water. Run a quick spin cycle empty, then a normal cycle with a small towel load to verify dry operation under load.
Quality checks
- No water at the rear cabinet panel after a full wash and spin
- No howl during high-speed spin
- Basket centered with even gap to the outer tub
- Pressure sensor reading consistent with prior cycles (compare against service-mode pressure read if available)
When to walk away
If the outer tub shows scoring at the seal land, the inner-basket spider shows corrosion at the spline (a separate failure mode common on this platform), or the unit is past the bearing-kit economic threshold, recommend replacement instead. A bearing kit on a unit with a corroded spider is throwing parts at a machine that will fail again within a year.
Documentation
Photograph the tub support before and after, the drive nut torque value at install, and the pre-test cycle status. Customers who paid for an in-place rebuild appreciate seeing the work that happened inside a panel they can't see.
