Dryer Not Drying: Check Heat vs Airflow vs Cycle First

Why this matters

"Clothes still damp" is one complaint with three unrelated causes: the dryer makes no heat, the heat it makes cannot move through restricted airflow, or the cycle ends early because a control or sensor cuts it short. Each lives in a different circuit. Chasing a heating element when the real fault is a lint-clogged vent burns the visit and, on gas units, leaves a real safety exposure if a tech defeats a thermostat instead of clearing a blockage. A fixed check order (airflow, then heat, then cycle) catches the most common and most hazardous cause first and keeps the gas and high-voltage work properly gated.

Symptom presentation

Long cycles with warm but damp loads, a drum that gets hot but clothes stay wet, frequent thermal trips, or a cycle that stops after a few minutes all read differently. A scorching cabinet and overheating point hard at airflow restriction. No heat at all (drum tumbles, air stays room temperature) points at the heat circuit. A timer or sensor that advances to "off" with the load still wet points at the cycle/control branch. Ask whether the room gets humid during a run (a sign exhaust is not leaving the building).

A telling distinction is hot-but-wet versus cold-and-wet. Clothes that come out hot and steamy yet still damp mean heat is being made but moisture is not leaving, the airflow signature, because saturated air recirculates instead of carrying water out the vent. Clothes that tumble for a full cycle and come out cool and wet mean no heat was made at all, the heat-circuit signature. Asking the customer to describe the load's temperature at the end of a failed cycle often assigns the branch before any tool is used.

Quick checks

  • Clean the lint screen and inspect for a fabric-softener glaze film that chokes airflow even when the screen looks clear (run water through it; a screen that holds water instead of passing it is glazed).
  • Disconnect the vent at the wall and run the dryer. Strong, hot exhaust at the cabinet but weak flow at the wall hood confirms a vent restriction in the run.
  • Confirm full power: electric dryers need both 120V legs (240V total) at the terminal block; one open leg gives a tumbling drum (the motor runs on 120V) with no heat.
  • On gas units, confirm gas supply is on, other gas appliances work, and the burner attempts ignition (the igniter glows).
  • Feel or measure the exhaust temperature. Healthy dryer exhaust runs roughly 120-160F (49-71C) at the outlet under load; far above that signals restriction, far below signals weak or no heat.
  • Check the drum and lint area for visible scorching, which points at a serious airflow restriction already driving the element dangerously hot.

Isolation tree

Work airflow first because restriction causes both "no dry" and dangerous overheating.

  1. Airflow branch: Measure or feel exhaust flow at the wall termination. Restricted flow, a packed vent run, a crushed transition duct, or a blower wheel clogged with lint all reduce drying and trip the high-limit thermostat. Clear the vent, check the blower wheel for free rotation, and confirm the exhaust hood damper opens.
  2. Heat branch, electric: With airflow confirmed good and no heat, check both supply legs at the terminal block. Then ohm the heating element (typically 8 to 12 ohms; infinite reads open). Test the thermal fuse (should read near 0 ohms; an open thermal fuse is the single most common no-heat cause and is usually triggered by prior airflow restriction), the high-limit thermostat, and the operating (cycling) thermostat.
  3. Heat branch, gas: Confirm gas valve coils energize and the igniter glows (igniter typically 50 to 400 ohms cold). A glowing igniter that never lights points at weak or stuck gas-valve coils; no glow points at an open igniter, thermal fuse, or flame-sensor (radiant) thermostat.
  4. Cycle branch: If heat and airflow are good but cycles end early, test the moisture-sensor bars (clean for residue), the thermistor input, and the timer or electronic control. A shorted sensor or a dirty bar strip can fool an auto-dry cycle into stopping early.

Confirming diagnosis

Airflow is confirmed when clearing the vent restores a hot, strong exhaust and the high-limit stops tripping. The heat branch is confirmed by an element or igniter that ohms open, or supply legs that read voltage on only one phase. The cycle branch is confirmed when a timed (not auto) cycle dries normally while auto-dry quits early, isolating the fault to the moisture-sensing input rather than the heat source. Always rerun a full timed cycle and verify exhaust temperature after any repair.

A repeatedly tripping thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat is a symptom of restricted airflow, not a part to simply jumper or replace in isolation. Defeating these safeties on a dryer with a clogged vent creates a fire hazard. On gas dryers, only qualified personnel should work the burner, gas valve, and supply connections; verify no leaks with the gas on after service.

Remediation

  • Airflow: Clear the full vent run end to end, replace crushed or plastic transition duct with rigid or semi-rigid metal, clean the blower wheel and housing of packed lint, and confirm the exterior hood damper opens freely.
  • Electric heat: Replace the open element, thermal fuse, or failed cycling/high-limit thermostat. Always find and clear the airflow cause behind a blown thermal fuse, or the new fuse will blow again.
  • Gas heat: Replace the open igniter (handle by the bracket only), weak gas-valve coils, or radiant/flame-sensor thermostat. Confirm clean ignition and a steady flame over several cycles, and leak-check the gas connection.
  • Cycle/control: Clean the moisture-sensor bars of residue or replace them, replace a failed thermistor, or replace the timer or electronic control after confirming the sensing inputs are at fault.
