Water Under Washer: Pool Shape Hose vs Pump vs Tub Tree

Why this matters

A puddle under a washer is a water-damage liability and a diagnostic puzzle, and the shape, location, and timing of the pool tell you the source before you remove a panel. A leak that only appears during fill is upstream (supply hoses, inlet valve); a leak during drain/spin is the pump, drain hose, or boot; a slow seep that tracks the bearing area is the tub seal. Mopping and guessing leaves the leak active and risks a callback after the customer's floor is damaged. Reading the pool, then confirming by cycle phase, isolates the leak path on the first visit.

Symptom presentation

A pool toward the rear that appears only while the machine fills points at the supply hoses or inlet valve. A pool that appears during drain or spin, often toward the front-bottom, points at the drain pump, drain hose, or (on front-loaders) the door boot/gasket. A slow, persistent seep centered under the tub, sometimes rusty, that worsens over weeks points at the tub seal/bearing area. A pool that appears regardless of phase with suds points at an overflow from too much detergent or a stuck level sensor. Note where the water originates and which cycle phase produces it.

The volume and timing also sort the causes. A sudden large pool that arrives all at once during one phase is usually a hose let-go, a cracked pump, or a boot tear releasing a slug of water. A small puddle that is always present, even when the machine has sat unused, with no relation to any cycle phase, is a slow supply-valve weep or a tub-seal seep rather than a drain-path fault. Matching pool size and timing to the cycle narrows the branch before disassembly.

Quick checks

  • Run a fill-only and watch the rear hoses and inlet valve for drips; rear pool during fill isolates the supply side.
  • Run a drain/spin and watch the pump, filter, and drain hose; front-bottom water during drain isolates the pump/hose.
  • On front-loaders, inspect the lower third of the door boot for tears, trapped debris (coins, wire, glass), or a failed seal that leaks only during tumble when water sloshes against it.
  • Trace the pool to its highest point with a dry paper towel; water runs downhill, so the wet origin, not the puddle center, is the source.
  • Check for suds; sudsing over-the-top points at detergent overdose or non-HE detergent in an HE machine, or a level-sensing fault, not a hardware leak.
  • Slide the machine out and inspect the floor under the transmission/bearing area for a slow, possibly rust-stained seep that is present even at rest, the tub-seal signature.
  • Confirm the machine is level and the drain standpipe height is within spec; a too-low standpipe can siphon and overflow.

Isolation tree

Use cycle phase to pick the branch.

  1. Fill-phase (supply) branch: A leak only during fill is the hot/cold fill hoses, their washers, or the water inlet valve body. Check hose connections and the valve outlet. A cracked hose or a failed valve gasket drips at fill and stops when fill ends. Confirmed by a dry machine at rest that wets only during fill.
  2. Drain/spin (pump and hose) branch: A leak during drain or spin is the drain pump housing, the pump filter cap, the internal drain hoses/clamps, or (front-load) the door boot. Inspect the pump for a cracked housing or a loose filter, and the boot for tears. Confirmed by water that appears when the pump runs and the drum spins.
  3. Tub-seal branch: A slow seep centered under the tub, often with rust streaks and a worsening bearing noise, is the main tub seal failing and letting water reach the bearing. Confirmed by water tracking down from the bearing area and a gritty, noisy spin.
  4. Overflow/suds branch: Water plus suds with no hardware leak points at detergent overdose or a stuck pressure/level sensor letting the tub overfill. Confirmed by excessive suds and a normal hardware inspection.

Confirming diagnosis

Supply is confirmed when the leak appears only at fill and a hose/valve drip is found; tightening or replacing the hose washer or valve stops it. Pump/hose is confirmed when water appears during drain/spin and a cracked housing, loose filter, or torn boot is located. Tub seal is confirmed by a central under-tub seep, rust, and a noisy bearing, isolated from the pump by the timing (constant slow seep versus drain-only flow). Overflow is confirmed by suds and a clean hardware inspection. The decisive input is always which cycle phase produces the water.

Remediation

  • Supply: Replace cracked fill hoses and washers or the failed inlet valve; reinforced (burst-resistant) hoses reduce future flood risk, and replacing both hoses at once avoids a repeat call on the mate.
  • Pump/hose: Replace a cracked pump housing, reseat or replace the filter cap with its O-ring, replace failed internal hoses and re-clamp loose connections, or replace a torn door boot (orient the new boot drain hole correctly).
  • Tub seal: Replace the tub seal and the bearing it protects, since a leaking seal has usually already begun to ruin the bearing; this is a major teardown and the bearing should always go with the seal.
  • Overflow: Correct detergent type and dose, or replace a stuck level/pressure sensor or clear its air-dome hose so the control reads the true water level.

Run a full cycle and confirm a dry floor through fill, wash, drain, and spin before closing.
