Why this matters

A washer that never delivers hot water draws a service call for the inlet valve, but the most common root cause is upstream: the household hot supply itself. A water heater that has failed, run out of capacity, or fed through a crossed connection delivers cold or lukewarm water to the machine no matter how good the valve is. Replacing the washer's hot inlet solenoid when the heater is dead is wasted parts and labor, and the symptom returns on the first hot cycle. The diagnosis has to prove whether hot water actually reaches the washer's hot inlet before anything inside the machine is condemned. This is a cross-system fault hiding behind an appliance symptom, and the deciding test sits outside the appliance.

Modern washers complicate this because many use automatic temperature control (ATC): the control reads incoming hot and cold temperatures and blends to hit a target. If the hot supply is weak, ATC silently fills mostly cold to protect the cycle, so the customer sees lukewarm wash water and assumes the machine is broken when the supply is the problem.

Symptom presentation

Hot and warm wash temperatures run cold or barely warm; cold cycles are fine. The washer fills and runs normally otherwise. The customer may report no hot water at other fixtures too, or that it "ran out" mid-laundry. A single appliance with no hot water while the rest of the house has plenty points at the washer's hot side; the whole house cold points at the heater or supply. A useful number to carry: a healthy residential hot supply at the washer should read roughly 120 to 130 F at the tap after a short run; readings in the 80s or 90s F mean the hot side is weak or blended even before the machine touches it.

Quick checks

  • Check hot water at a nearby fixture (kitchen or laundry-room sink). No hot anywhere means the heater or supply, not the washer.
  • Confirm the hot supply hose valve at the washer is fully open, not the cold one mislabeled.
  • Verify the hot and cold hoses are not reversed at the washer (a crossed install sends cold to the hot port).
  • Feel the hot inlet hose during a hot fill: warming hose means hot water is arriving; a cold hose during a hot call means no hot upstream or a dead hot solenoid.
  • Check the water-heater setpoint and recovery. A setpoint too low, a tripped reset, a failed element/burner, or an undersized tank explains lukewarm delivery.
  • Confirm the washer's hot inlet screen is not clogged with sediment, which throttles hot flow. Sediment-heavy supply lines and old galvanized pipe pack these screens fast.
  • Read the actual temperature: a probe thermometer on the hot inlet hose during a hot fill tells you in seconds whether hot water arrives. Pair it with a reading at the nearest tap to separate supply from machine.

Branch A: No hot at nearby fixtures.

  • Cross-system fault at the water heater or supply. Causes: heater off, tripped high-limit reset, failed upper/lower element or burner, gas/power loss to the heater, a closed or stuck supply valve, or an undersized/exhausted tank. On an electric tank, a failed upper element gives no hot at all; a failed lower element gives a little hot that runs out fast. Not the washer. Refer to plumbing/water-heater service.

Branch B: Hot at fixtures, hot hose stays cold during hot fill.

  • Hot supply valve closed -> open it; confirm the handle actually opens the hot line, not the cold.
  • Hot and cold hoses reversed -> a crossed install feeds cold to the hot port. Swap to the correct ports and re-test.
  • Hot inlet screen clogged -> remove and clean the screen, flush the line.
  • Supply good, ports correct, screen clean, hot solenoid not opening -> washer hot inlet valve. Confirm by metering the solenoid coil for its rated resistance (a typical inlet solenoid reads in the low hundreds of ohms; open or shorted is bad) and checking for line voltage at the coil during a hot call. Coil energized with no flow means a mechanically stuck valve; no voltage at the coil during a hot call points back to the control. Replace the valve when the coil is good but the valve will not pass water.

Branch C: Hot at fixtures but lukewarm at the washer.

  • Long pipe run / low flow blending -> the machine's ATC may be blending toward cold; confirm the heater setpoint and that the hose is genuinely hot at the wall before the fill starts. A long, uninsulated run cools the slug of water sitting in the pipe.
  • Heater setpoint low or recovering slowly -> set the heater to a safe delivery temperature (commonly around 120 F at the tap to balance scald risk and wash performance) per the water-heater service.

Branch D: Hot only at start, goes cold mid-cycle.

  • Tank capacity exhausted -> undersized or failing heater; the first gallons are hot, then cold takes over. Cross-system, not the washer. The fix is heater service or upsizing, not an inlet valve.

Confirming diagnosis

The fixture test is the fork. No hot water at a nearby tap proves the heater/supply and clears the washer entirely. Hot at the tap (120 F or so) but a cold hot-hose at the washer narrows it to the washer's hot path: closed valve, reversed hoses, clogged screen, or a dead solenoid. Confirm the solenoid with two readings: resistance across the coil with power off (rated low-hundreds of ohms, neither open nor shorted), and line voltage at the coil during a hot fill. A good coil that energizes but passes no water is a stuck valve; a coil that never sees voltage during a hot call points back at the control or temperature-select switch, not the valve. Document the fixture hot-water result, the hose temperature during a hot fill, the port/hose orientation, the coil resistance, and the coil voltage. That record assigns the work to water-heater service versus a washer valve versus the control, with no guessing.

Remediation

  • No house hot water: refer to water-heater service (relight/reset, element/burner replacement, or tank upsizing as appropriate). This is plumbing scope.
  • Closed hot valve or reversed hoses: open the valve, correct the hose connections, re-test a hot fill.
  • Clogged inlet screen: clean or replace the screen, re-verify flow.
  • Failed hot inlet solenoid (supply confirmed good): replace the washer inlet valve.
  • Lukewarm from a low heater setpoint: adjust per the water-heater service; the washer is not at fault.

Re-verify by running a hot wash and confirming the hot hose warms promptly and the wash water reaches the expected temperature.
