Washer Leaks Only On Spin Large Load Seal Vs Hose Decision Tree
Why this matters
A washer that stays dry through fill and wash but leaks only during the spin of a large load is reporting a pressure-and-motion-dependent leak, which narrows the suspect list dramatically. Spin is the only phase that combines high RPM, high water-shed velocity, and the maximum out-of-balance forces a large load can generate, so leaks that need pressure, dynamic motion, or a full-volume drain to appear only show then. A static gasket or a slow drip would leak on every phase; a spin-only leak points at the tub seal under centrifugal load, the bellows or boot at the door, the drain hose under full pump pressure, or a connection that only weeps when the tub shifts at speed. The branch decisions separate a true sealed-component failure from a hose or clamp that leaks only at peak flow, and confirm whether the large load is the cause through imbalance or simply the only condition that fills the tub enough to reach a marginal seal.
Symptom presentation
Customer reports water on the floor only after big loads, only during or just after the spin, with normal loads staying dry. On a front loader the puddle often appears at the front under the door; on a top loader it shows at the rear or under the cabinet. Wash and rinse phases are dry.
Reproduce with a known large load or a controlled water charge and watch the spin. Have towels staged to trace the first appearance of water. The origin point, front bellows versus rear tub seal versus a hose run, is the single most valuable observation.
Quick checks at the door
Run a spin with the cabinet panels off and a flashlight on the suspect areas. Watch for water tracking from the door boot, from the tub seal at the bearing housing, from the drain hose connection, or from a sump or pump gasket. Mark the highest point water originates from; gravity carries it down from there.
Inspect the drain hose for a hairline split, a loose clamp, or a hose that only pressurizes fully on a big-load drain. Check the door boot or bellows folds for trapped debris and tears that open only when the boot flexes at speed.

Branch A (water from the rear tub seal at the bearing area): a worn tub or main seal leaks under the centrifugal load of a heavy off-balance spin and can co-present with bearing noise. Confirm by tracing water down from the bearing housing and checking for rust staining and roughness when spinning the basket by hand. This is a tub-seal and often bearing job.
Branch B (water from the front door boot or bellows): a torn or debris-cut bellows leaks only when the boot flexes and water sheds against it at speed. Inspect every fold for tears and embedded objects, especially the lower front. Replace the bellows and reseat both clamps.
Branch C (drain hose or clamp leaks at peak flow): the drain pump moves the most water on a large-load drain, and a split hose, a loose clamp, or a cracked sump fitting weeps only at that peak pressure. Branch D (imbalance-driven splash, not a sealed leak): a large off-balance load makes the tub strike the cabinet or splash water over the tub lip in a top loader, presenting as a leak. Confirm load distribution and suspension or shock condition; correcting balance stops the splash. This is a suspension and balance issue, not a seal.
Branch E (detergent oversudsing forces water out): excess detergent on a large load can push suds and water out a vent or the dispenser during spin. Confirm dosing and run a controlled load with correct HE detergent and amount before condemning hardware. Suds also reduce drain efficiency, so the pump cannot fully empty before spin and the residual water sheds out under centrifugal force, which reads exactly like a seal leak.
Branch F (dispenser or recirculation hose leak under flow): on machines that recirculate wash water or that have a top-mounted dispenser fed by a hose, a cracked recirculation hose or a loose dispenser-to-tub connection only pressurizes and weeps when the pump runs hard on a full load. Trace water above the tub line, not just below it; a leak that starts high and runs down the outside of the tub points at the recirculation or dispenser path rather than the lower tub seal. Inspect every hose junction above the waterline and replace the cracked hose or reseat the clamp.
Confirming the diagnosis
After repair, run a deliberately large load and a high-speed spin with panels accessible and watch the previously leaking area stay dry. Repeat with an intentionally off-balance load to stress the suspension and seals. For a tub-seal repair, confirm no water at the bearing housing and smooth quiet spin. For a hose or clamp repair, confirm the full-pressure drain stays dry at the connection.
