Washing Machine Common Repairs

Why this matters

Washing machines are first-call appliances; customers can't go a week without one. Average tech call. Front-load washers (HE) introduced new failure modes - door boot, drain pump filter, suds-lock, drum bearings - that top-load techs can struggle with. This is the working procedure for the dominant failures on both styles.

Top-load vs front-load

Top-load (agitator)

  • Cheaper, simpler, more durable mechanically
  • Higher water + detergent use; uses gravity for fill + drain
  • Common failures: agitator dogs, clutch, lid switch, motor coupler, drain pump
  • Lifespan: 12 - 18 years

Top-load (impeller, HE)

  • High-efficiency top-load with impeller plate instead of agitator
  • Common failures: shift actuator, sensor, drain pump
  • Lifespan: 10 - 15 years

Front-load (horizontal-axis)

  • Best wash performance + lowest water use
  • Common failures: door boot, drain pump filter, bearings, control board
  • Lifespan: 10 - 15 years
  • Customer must do monthly clean cycle to prevent mildew + bearing wear

Failure 1: Won't drain

Drain pump filter (front-load specifically)

  • Most front-loaders have a serviceable lint trap behind a small panel near the floor
  • Customer should clean monthly; rarely do
  • Pull filter; remove debris (coins, keys, hair, lint)
  • Inspect impeller for damage

Drain hose

  1. Kinked behind washer = common cause
  2. Verify hose rises to standpipe at appropriate height (no siphon - top of hose 24" minimum above pump)
  3. Clear any clog

Drain pump motor

  1. Test 120V at pump terminals during drain cycle
  2. Visual: spin impeller by hand for freedom
  3. Replace if seized or no electrical response

Failure 2: Won't spin

Top-load - motor coupler

  • Direct-drive top-load (Whirlpool / Kenmore design family) uses a rubber coupler between motor + transmission
  • Common failure at 5 - 10 years
  • Symptom: motor runs but no agitation or spin

Top-load - clutch / drive belt

  • Worn drive belt: slipping, smell of burning rubber
  • Replace belt + inspect motor pulley

Front-load - door not latching

  • Door switch must be closed for spin cycle
  • Inspect latch + sensor; replace if defective

Front-load - drum bearings

  • Symptom: loud howling on spin, water under washer (seal fails first)
  • Repair: tub disassembly + bearing replacement
  • Often the "is this worth fixing" call - on machines 7+ years, recommend replacement

Failure 3: Door boot leaking (front-load)

The rubber door boot at the front of the drum is a wear part. Tears, mold buildup, or detergent damage cause leaks.

  1. Inspect for visible tears or perforation
  2. Mold buildup behind boot: clean with vinegar + dish soap
  3. Spring + clamp securing boot can corrode

Failure 4: Won't fill

Water inlet valve

  1. Test 120V at solenoid during fill
  2. Verify supply valve open + hose connected
  3. Clean inlet filter screens (sediment accumulates)
  4. Replace valve if solenoid commanded but no flow

Lid switch / door switch

  • Most washers won't fill with door / lid open as a safety
  • Verify switch closes on door / lid close

Water level sensor / pressure switch

  • Reads water level in tub
  • If reads "full" with empty tub, won't initiate fill
  • Common on top-load; pressure hose clog OR switch failure

Failure 5: Excessive vibration / "walking"

Leveling

  1. Verify washer level on all four legs
  2. Adjust leveling feet
  3. Floor flex (older homes, raised floor over crawl space) - recommend washer pedestal or anti-vibration pads

Shock absorbers (front-load)

  • 3 - 4 shocks dampen drum movement
  • Worn shocks = bouncing drum + cabinet vibration
  • Replace as set

Drum bearings (front-load)

  • Already covered in spin failure - also causes vibration

Suspension rods (top-load)

  • 4 rods suspend the tub
  • Worn rods = uneven tub + lid-banging
  • Replace as set

Failure 6: Excessive suds / overflow

Wrong detergent

  • HE washers REQUIRE HE detergent; using non-HE produces excessive suds + machine reads "overfilled"
  • Customer education + run rinse-only cycle 2 - 3 times to clear

Detergent quantity

  • Modern HE washers use 1 - 2 tablespoons per load
  • Customer instinct uses 1/2 cup; results in suds-lock

Drain pump filter clogged with suds (front-load)

  • Pump cavitates in suds; cycle aborts
  • Clean filter, run clean-cycle with 1 cup white vinegar

Failure 7: Won't start / no power

Lid switch (top-load)

  • Lid open OR switch failed = no fill, no spin
  • Test continuity; replace

Door lock (front-load)

  • Door must lock electronically; common failure point
  • Test electrical signal at lock; replace if no actuation

Thermal fuse / TCO

  • Some machines have a thermal fuse on the control panel
  • Replaces after over-temp event

Control board

  • Final diagnosis if above all check out

Failure 8: Code / display fault

  • Manufacturer-specific code list
  • Common: Samsung 5E (drain), LG OE (drain), Whirlpool F35 (pressure switch), GE E2/E3 (load imbalance)
  • Address per code

NEVER work on a washer-dryer pair without disconnecting power AND water. A live wire in a wet environment plus customer-side water supply at 60+ psi = dangerous service incident. Trip the breaker AND shut off both supply valves AND drain the supply lines before opening any panel. The 5 minutes of prep prevents the 5-hour cleanup OR the medical event.

Decision: repair vs replace

  • Machine <5 years: repair
  • Machine 5 - 8 years: repair if <50% replacement cost
  • Front-load 8+ years with bearing failure: usually replace
  • Top-load 10+ years: case-by-case
  • Premium brand (Miele, Speed Queen): higher repair threshold
