Wall Oven Broiler Works Bake Does Not Decision Tree
Why this matters
When a wall oven's broil cycle works correctly and the bake cycle does not, the failure isolates to the bake element, the bake-side power path, or the bake relay on the control board (broil and bake use separate relays on virtually every modern board). The most common error on this call is to assume a bad bake element and replace it without measuring; about half the time the element is intact and the bake relay or harness is at fault. The tree below walks the no-bake-with-good-broil call from the cheapest verification to the highest-cost repair in the order that produces the highest fix rate.
Symptom presentation
Customer reports a bake cycle starts (the oven sets a setpoint, the preheat indicator illuminates) but the cavity does not heat or only warms slightly. The broil cycle, by contrast, produces full visible heat at the upper element within 30 seconds. Sometimes the customer reports the bake element "glows red briefly" and then turns off; this is a different symptom (intermittent bake) and routes through Branch F below.
Confirm by setting bake at 350 F and observing the lower (bake) element through the cavity. A working bake element glows red within 60 to 90 seconds. A failed bake element produces no glow at all even after 5 minutes.
Confirm by reading cavity temperature with a calibrated thermocouple over 20 minutes; a bake-failure cavity will stay within 30 F of room temperature.
Quick checks at the door
Inspect the bake element visually. The element is a metal-sheathed rod at the bottom of the cavity (sometimes hidden under a baffle pan). Look for a visible break, a swollen section, or arc damage. A visibly damaged element is condemned without further test.
Measure bake-element resistance with the unit cold and the element disconnected. Most bake elements read 14 to 24 ohms at room temperature; consult the model service tag. An open element reads infinity; a shorted-to-ground element reads continuity to chassis.
Inspect the bake-element terminals at the rear of the cavity. The terminals on most wall ovens are spade connectors that can corrode, loosen, or burn. A burned spade connector with discolored insulation is a smoking gun for high resistance at the connection; replace the receptacle and the harness pigtail back to a clean splice.
Compare bake to broil. With the broil set and active, measure voltage at the broil element terminals (240 V on most US wall ovens). Then set bake and measure voltage at the bake-element terminals. No voltage at bake terminals with the bake cycle commanded points at the bake relay or the bake power path on the control board.
Isolation tree
Branch A: bake element measures open. Replace the bake element. Inspect the terminal block at the rear for arc damage and replace the block if discolored.
Branch B: bake element measures within spec, but voltage at the bake-element terminals is zero with bake commanded. Test the bake relay on the control board. On most modern wall ovens (KitchenAid, GE, Bosch, Wolf, Thermador), the bake relay is a 30 A board-mounted relay sometimes accessible from the rear of the oven without pulling the unit. A relay that fails open with the broil relay still functional is the typical "broil works, bake does not" failure on boards 7 to 12 years old. Replace the relay on socketed boards; replace the board on soldered-relay platforms.
Branch C: bake element good, voltage at the bake terminals present, but the element does not heat under load. This is a power-path interruption between the element terminals and the element body, typically a high-resistance corroded spade. Replace the terminal receptacle and pigtail.
Branch D: bake element good, voltage at the bake terminals present intermittently. The bake relay is welding momentarily and then releasing under load. Replace the relay or the board. This branch can also point at a thermal cutoff in series with the bake-only circuit that has gone marginal; consult the model service manual for the bake-circuit cutoff location.
Branch E: bake element good, voltage at the bake terminals present, element heats but cavity stays cool. The convection fan (if present) is running backward or the bake-baffle pan is missing, and heat is not circulating to the cavity. Confirm fan rotation direction matches the platform spec and confirm any baffle pans are installed.
Branch F: bake element glows briefly and turns off. The oven sensor is reading the cavity too hot too fast; the bake cycle terminates early. Inspect the sensor position; a sensor displaced by the customer during cleaning so that it touches the upper wall reads ambient-plus-radiation from the broil element. Re-position the sensor per the model spec. If the sensor is positioned correctly, measure sensor resistance at room temperature against the resistance table.
Branch G: dual-element bake (some platforms use both the lower bake element and the upper element on bake at reduced duty). On dual-element platforms, a failure of the lower bake element with the upper element still on produces a weak-bake symptom that is distinct from no-bake. Confirm platform configuration on the model service tag.
Confirming the diagnosis
After repair, run a preheat-and-soak test at 350 F for 30 minutes with a thermocouple at the center rack. Acceptance: cavity reads 345 to 355 F at the 20-minute mark.
Run a second test at 425 F bake and confirm cavity reaches 420 to 430 F.
For Branch B (bake relay), pull the post-repair event log if the platform supports it and confirm no new bake-relay faults after 24 hours of normal use.
Remediation parts list by branch
Branch A: bake element, terminal block, terminal receptacle and pigtail.
Branch B: bake relay (socketed), main control board (soldered relay).
Branch C: terminal receptacle, harness pigtail.
Branch D: bake relay, control board, thermal cutoff (bake circuit).
Branch E: convection fan motor, baffle pan, fan-relay.
Branch F: no parts; sensor repositioning, or sensor replacement.
Branch G: lower bake element on dual-element platforms.
When to escalate
A wall oven with a soldered-relay control board that has failed bake while broil still works is a board replacement, which on built-in wall ovens (Wolf, Thermador, Miele, Bosch Benchmark) is a significant repair. Quote the board price and a separate trip back to install. On units more than 12 years old, frame the buy-vs-fix conversation around DOE 10 CFR Part 430 efficiency tiers and the platform-specific replacement timeline.
