Replace a Washing Machine Inlet Valve

Goal

Replace a failed inlet valve on a residential washing machine. The inlet valve (water inlet solenoid) controls hot + cold water entering the washer. Common failure modes: leaking, stuck-open (washer continuously fills), or stuck-closed (washer won't fill). Standard service repair; 45 - 75 minute job.

Prerequisites

  • Replacement inlet valve matched by:
    • Washer make + model
    • Connector type (most front-load + top-load are 1-amp solenoid; some are 2-amp)
    • Inlet thread (typically 3/4" hose connection)
  • Channel-lock pliers
  • Phillips + flathead screwdrivers
  • Towels, bucket
  • Multimeter
  • 45 - 75 minutes

Steps

  1. Confirm the diagnosis. Inlet valve failures:
  • Leaking water from the inlet connections → corroded valve seat
  • Continuous fill (washer overflows) → stuck-open valve
  • No fill at all → stuck-closed valve (verify supply hoses + breaker first)
  • Fills only hot OR only cold → one solenoid is failed
  1. Verify the failure isn't the supply hoses or strainer screens. Pull supply hoses; check the small strainer screens at the connection points - clogged screens cause both no-fill + leak issues.
  2. Cut power. Unplug washer.
  3. Close water supply at the wall valves (hot + cold).
  4. Disconnect supply hoses from the back of the washer. Bucket below for residual water.
  5. Pull washer forward + access the back panel (typically top + 2 - 4 screws).
  6. Inlet valve location: usually directly behind the supply hose connections. Photograph wiring first.
  7. Disconnect electrical from the solenoid terminals (2 wires per coil; one valve has 1 OR 2 coils).
  8. Disconnect the hot + cold water inlets at the valve outlet (internal water lines to the tub).
  9. Remove mounting screws holding the valve to the back panel.
  10. Test the failed valve with multimeter (optional - verify diagnosis):
  • Coil resistance reading: 500 - 1500 ohms typical
  • Open circuit → solenoid burned out
  • Continuous → coil OK; mechanical issue
  1. Install the new valve in the same orientation. Hand-tighten the mounting screws.
  2. Connect electrical to the solenoid terminals per photo.
  3. Connect water inlet lines to the valve outlet.
  4. Replace the back panel.
  5. Reconnect supply hoses to the back of the washer.
  6. Open supply valves slowly. Watch for leaks at every connection.
  7. Plug washer in + test. Run a rinse cycle:
  • Both hot + cold inlets fill normally
  • No leaks during filling or draining
  • Customer demonstrates operation before leaving

Verification

  • No leaks at any inlet or outlet connection during fill cycle
  • Both hot + cold fill correctly (verify with the water-temp setting)
  • Washer completes a full cycle without issues
  • Customer signs the field report

Troubleshooting

  • New valve still leaks: usually a damaged seal at the outlet line. Verify the rubber washers are seated correctly.
  • Hot inlet still doesn't fill: hot supply line clogged OR water-heater issue, not the valve.
  • Washer fills slow: water pressure low at the supply OR strainer screen blocked at the inlet.
  • Washer starts cycle but never advances: water-level pressure switch (a separate component) is bad, not the inlet valve.

NEVER reconnect supply hoses + walk away without verifying NO LEAKS for at least 5 minutes of operation. Slow leaks at the supply connection cause major flooding in laundry rooms + adjacent finished spaces. Customer left alone with a slow leak = significant insurance claim against your work. The 5-minute observation prevents this.
