Replace a Washer Drain Hose

Goal

Replace the drain hose on a residential washing machine. Cracked, leaking, or chewed (rodent damage) drain hoses are a common-but-easy repair. Often discovered during annual service (see Annual Washer & Dryer Service SOP); 20-minute repair that prevents a flooded laundry area.

Prerequisites

  • Replacement drain hose (matched length + diameter to OEM - most are 5/8" or 1" diameter, 6 - 8 ft length)
  • Hose clamp(s) - replace any existing pinch-style with screw-style
  • Towels (residual water always)
  • Pliers, screwdriver
  • 20 - 30 minutes

Steps

  1. Disconnect power. Unplug the washer or kill the breaker.
  2. Close water supply. Both hot + cold; some washers will accidentally run a fill cycle during the work.
  3. Pull the washer forward to access the back panel.
  4. Disconnect the drain hose at the standpipe / drain. Usually a friction fit - pull straight up; some are secured with a wire clamp to the wall.
  5. Disconnect the drain hose at the washer. Open the back panel if needed (typically 2 - 4 screws). Trace the drain hose to where it connects to the pump or tub.
  6. Catch residual water. Position a bucket OR shallow pan below. Water WILL come out.
  7. Loosen the spring clamp or screw clamp holding the hose to the washer.
  8. Pull the hose off the washer's outlet (it may stick from age). If totally stuck, cut it lengthwise WITH the hose pointed away from anything sensitive (residual water).
  9. Install the new drain hose. Push fully onto the washer's outlet. Apply NEW clamp (screw-style preferred; replaceable + reusable).
  10. Route the hose back to the standpipe / drain. Maintain the manufacturer's "high loop" - the hose must rise 24 - 36" before descending into the standpipe. Without this loop, dirty water siphons backward into the tub during rinse cycles.
  11. Secure the high loop with the washer's built-in hose clip OR a wall clip / strap.
  12. Connect to the standpipe. Don't push too deep (impedes drainage). The hose should be inserted just past where it can't be pulled out by drainage flow.
  13. Reattach the back panel.
  14. Push the washer back into position. Check the drain hose for kinks or twists.
  15. Restore power + water.
  16. Run a rinse-only cycle. Watch for:
  • Leaks at the washer-side clamp
  • Leaks at the standpipe
  • Proper drainage (water flows out, not back)

Verification

  • No leaks at either end during a full drain cycle
  • High loop maintained per installation specs
  • Washer drains within manufacturer's spec time
  • No dirty-water siphon-back during rinse cycle
  • Customer demonstrates a full load cycle before tech leaves

Troubleshooting

  • Leak at washer-side clamp: clamp not tight OR clamp's stretched. Use new screw-style clamp + torque firmly.
  • Slow drainage: hose pushed too deep into standpipe, restricting flow. Pull back 2 - 3".
  • Siphoning back into tub: high loop too low. Re-route with the manufacturer's loop height; secure to wall.
  • Standpipe overflows during drain: standpipe is undersized OR drain run is partially blocked. Different issue; refer to plumbing.

The high loop isn't a "nice to have" - without it, dirty rinse water siphons back into the tub during the rinse cycle, leaving streaks + soap residue on clothes. Customer sees this as "the washer doesn't rinse properly" and calls you back. ALWAYS verify the high loop is installed before declaring the job done.
