Gas Range Burner Won't Ignite - Diagnostic Tree

Symptom

Customer reports one or more gas range burners that click but don't light, or don't click at all. Cooktop ignition issues are common service calls - typically a part swap once the failed component is identified.

Likely Causes

In order of frequency:

  • Clogged burner ports (spilled food, grease, water) - 40 %
  • Wet ignitor after spillover or cleaning - 15 %
  • Faulty igniter spark module - 12 %
  • Broken igniter electrode (the small ceramic component) - 10 %
  • Failed burner switch / spark switch - 8 %
  • Failed safety valve (gas not flowing) - 5 %
  • Closed gas supply (after cleaning, moving, etc.) - 5 %
  • Empty propane tank (LP installations) - 3 %
  • Mis-routed igniter wire (chafed against frame, shorting) - 2 %

Diagnostic Steps

  1. Test each burner. Identify which burners fail. Pattern matters:
  • All burners click but don't light → gas supply issue OR spark-too-weak issue
  • All burners no-click → spark module failure
  • One burner clicks but no light → that burner's ignitor or valve
  • One burner no-click → that burner's switch or wiring
  1. Verify gas supply.
  • Other gas appliances working (water heater, furnace)?
  • Gas shutoff valve open (often closed during recent cleaning or move)?
  • For LP: check tank gauge
  1. Inspect the burner ports on a failing burner. Pull off the cap + base, look for:
  • Food debris in the ports
  • Standing water from spills or cleaning
  • Grease buildup blocking flow
  1. Clean the ports. Soak base in soapy water + scrub with a soft brush. Use a paper clip or thin wire to clear ports. Don't use anything that scratches.
  2. Dry thoroughly. Wet igniter won't fire. Use a clean cloth + let air-dry 15 - 30 min.
  3. Check the igniter electrode. Visually inspect; should be intact, white/gray ceramic with a metal tip:
  • Cracked or broken → replace
  • Carbon buildup → wipe clean
  • Bent away from the burner → reposition
  1. Test sparking (with all burners' knobs in the OFF position, then click one ON briefly). A working spark module produces a steady tick at one burner; multiple burners ticking = module wiring shorted.

Resolution

  • Clogged ports: clean + dry; spark resumes immediately
  • Wet igniter: dry it; lights once moisture is gone
  • Broken electrode: replace. Match by model.
  • Failed spark module: replace. All burners share one module on most ranges.
  • Failed burner switch: replace. One per burner.
  • Failed safety valve: replace. Gas-flow valve; if defective, valve doesn't open even when igniter sparks.
  • Closed gas supply: customer education + open the valve.
  • LP empty: customer fix; refill.
  • Chafed igniter wire: re-route + sleeve the wire to prevent re-chafe.

Gas leak indicators (smell, hissing, soot deposits) take precedence over the no-ignition diagnostic. If you suspect a gas leak: shut off the supply at the appliance, ventilate the kitchen, find the source (soapy-water test on connections) BEFORE doing electrical testing. An igniter spark on a leaked-gas room is a structural fire.

Prevention

  • Customer education on cleaning techniques (cap + base separate from base; never spray cleaner into open ports)
  • Annual deep clean of the cooktop interior (rare but valuable upsell for high-end ranges)
