After the Belt Swap, the Dryer Now Squeals: Decision Tree

Why this matters

A dryer comes in for a broken or slipping belt, you install a new one, and now it squeals where it did not before. The squeal makes it look like the new belt is defective or installed wrong. Occasionally that is the cause, but more often the belt swap put the drum back under proper tension and revealed worn rollers, a tired idler pulley, or a glazed bearing that the old slipping belt was hiding by never loading them fully. A fresh belt is also stiff and may chirp briefly until it seats. Knowing which squeals are break-in, which are install errors, and which are the parts the belt change unmasked keeps you from chasing the belt when the real wear is in the support components.

Symptom presentation

After belt replacement the dryer runs but squeals, chirps, or screeches. The pitch and timing are the clues: a steady squeal that tracks drum rotation, a rhythmic chirp once per revolution, a screech only at startup, or a squeal that comes and goes with the drum loaded. The drum may turn fine otherwise, or it may also feel rough. The customer's original complaint (no tumble, slipping) is resolved; the noise is the new issue.

Quick checks

  • Confirm the belt routing. A belt mis-threaded around the idler, or run on the wrong side of the tensioner, rubs and squeals. Verify against the routing diagram on the cabinet or tech sheet.
  • Spin the drum by hand with the belt installed (power off). Listen and feel for roughness, drag, or a grinding spot.
  • Inspect the idler pulley. A worn idler bushing squeals under the new belt's restored tension; spin it and feel for wobble or grind.
  • Inspect the drum support rollers (rear and/or front) and the front glide/bearing. Flat-spotted or dry rollers squeal once the belt loads the drum properly.

Isolation tree

Branch 1: Squeal tracks drum rotation, steady. Drum support rollers or the front bearing/glide. The old slipping belt let the drum ride loose; the new belt seats it firmly on worn rollers that now squeal. Spin each roller by hand; a rough, noisy, or flat-spotted roller is the source. Replace rollers in sets and renew the front glide/felt.

Branch 2: Rhythmic chirp once per revolution. A flat spot on the belt itself (less common on a new belt), or a single bad roller. Inspect the new belt for a defect or a twist; if the belt is sound, find the one roller making the once-per-rev noise.

Branch 3: Squeal at startup, then quiets. Often belt break-in on a stiff new belt, or an idler pulley that squeals under cold/high startup tension. If it fully clears in a minute and never returns, it was break-in. If it persists or returns each start, the idler bushing is worn.

Branch 4: Screech under load, quiet empty. The restored tension loads the idler and rollers; worn components only complain when the drum carries weight. Load-test and isolate by listening at the idler versus the rollers.

Branch 5: Belt rubbing the cabinet or seal. A mis-seated belt or a drum that was not reseated on its rear support rubs a felt seal or cabinet edge, producing a squeal. Verify the drum is fully home on its rear bearing and the seals are intact and not folded.

Branch 6: Squeal moved to the blower or motor, not the drum. Reaching in to route the belt sometimes disturbs the blower wheel or the motor's rear glide. A squeal that tracks motor speed rather than drum speed (much higher pitch, present even with the drum belt slipped off) points at the blower wheel rubbing its housing or a dry motor bearing, not the rollers. Slip the belt off and run the motor alone to separate motor/blower noise from drum noise.

Confirming diagnosis

  • Roller confirmation: with the belt off and drum supported, spin each roller; the rough/noisy roller reproduces the squeal pitch and feels gritty. Replacing it silences the dryer.
  • Idler confirmation: spin the idler pulley off the belt; a dry or worn bushing grinds or wobbles. A new idler clears a startup/under-tension squeal.
  • Break-in confirmation: the noise is loudest at first run, diminishes each cycle, and is gone within a use or two with all components verified good.
  • Routing confirmation: correcting a mis-threaded belt around the idler eliminates a rubbing squeal immediately.

Remediation

  • Replace worn drum support rollers (typically as a set) and the front glide/bearing felt; lubricate roller shafts per the tech sheet.
  • Replace a worn idler pulley; do not re-grease a sealed worn bushing.
  • Re-route the belt correctly around the drum and idler per the diagram; ensure no twist.
  • Reseat the drum fully on its rear support and confirm seals are intact and not folded.
  • For genuine break-in, run a cycle or two and confirm the squeal clears; replace the belt only if a defect is visible.
  • Separate motor/blower noise from drum noise by running the motor with the belt off; replace a dry motor bearing or reseat a rubbing blower wheel.
  • Run a full cycle and confirm quiet operation under a normal load before closing.

Unplug the dryer before removing panels; the drum motor and any electric heat element carry line voltage. On gas dryers, do not disturb the gas line or burner during a belt/roller repair, and verify no gas odor before and after; gas connections fall under ANSI Z21 and must be leak-checked if touched.
