Microwave Service + Magnetron Replacement

Why this matters

Microwave repair is high-skill / high-risk work. The high-voltage capacitor stores LETHAL energy even after unplug - 2,000+ volts at hundreds of milliamps. Many techs avoid microwave work for this reason; that means premium service rates for those who DO it correctly. Service. Safety: high-voltage capacitor (read before any microwave work)

The capacitor in a microwave can hold a lethal charge for HOURS after unplug. The bleed resistor across it can fail - meaning you assume it's safe + it isn't.

ALWAYS discharge before touching:

  1. Unplug + verify power off
  2. Locate capacitor (usually mounted near magnetron with HV wires + ground)
  3. With insulated-handle screwdriver (rated 5kV+), short across capacitor terminals + then to chassis ground
  4. Brief spark normal if charge was present
  5. Verify discharge with multimeter on DC volts range
  6. Only THEN proceed

The discharge step is mandatory every time. Skipping it once is enough to kill.

Common microwave failures

No power / dead

  • Door switch (most common): primary, secondary, monitor switches
  • Thermal fuse: trips on overheat
  • Line fuse: in-line 15A or 20A fuse
  • Control board: rare but possible

Door switches

  • Three switches per door (primary, secondary, monitor)
  • Monitor switch INVERTED - closed only when door closed; if door open + monitor closed = fault triggers fuse blow
  • All three must be in correct state for microwave to operate
  • Common fault: monitor switch sticks closed; blows line fuse

Won't heat (turntable spins, light on)

  • Magnetron failed (most common)
  • HV diode failed
  • HV capacitor failed
  • HV transformer failed (rare)

Magnetron replacement (the typical "won't heat" repair)

  1. Discharge capacitor (mandatory; see above)
  2. Note all electrical connections
  3. Remove magnetron (4 bolts typical)
  4. Inspect new magnetron - verify part number matches
  5. Apply thermal grease between magnetron flange + waveguide if specified
  6. Install with bolts in cross-pattern; torque per spec
  7. Reconnect electrical
  8. Test: small cup of water for 30 seconds; water heat = magnetron working

Cost: magnetron; 45 - 90 minutes labor

Door interlock won't close (door switch fault)

  • Often dropped or impacted door bends the actuator post
  • Realign or replace door

Light bulb out

  • Usually accessible via door OR back cover
  • Replace with appliance-rated bulb (40W typical, 130V - NOT standard household)

Turntable won't rotate

  1. Turntable motor: 3-rpm AC motor under the floor
  2. Drive coupler: plastic coupler between motor + turntable shaft
  3. Common fault: glass turntable too large for ring; rotates off ring

Display / control panel issues

  • Touchpad failure (membrane breakdown): replace touchpad
  • Many over-the-range models have integrated controls - board replacement = touchpad replacement

Sparking inside cavity

  • Metal in food (foil, twist tie) - customer education
  • Damaged waveguide cover (cardboard or mica plate between magnetron + cavity): clean or replace
  • Cavity damage (chipped paint exposing metal): repair with cavity paint OR refer to replacement
  • DO NOT operate microwave with sparking; magnetron damage occurs fast

Over-the-range specific issues

Vent fan won't run

  • Motor failure
  • Capacitor on motor
  • Speed switch
  • Filter clogged (grease) - clean filter as preventive maintenance customer education

Light under OTR won't work

  • Bulb (most common; halogen typically)
  • Light switch

Installation considerations (OTR especially)

  • 30" cabinet mount typical for OTR
  • 13.5" minimum from cooktop surface (per most manufacturer specs); local codes vary
  • Vent: recirculation OR external vent - confirm installation type
  • Bracket mounting requires 4 lag bolts into stud + top cabinet mount

Cost-of-repair vs replacement

  • Built-in microwave: usually repair worth it; replacement requires matching cabinet cutout + finish
