Maytag Bravos XL Shift Actuator Replacement
Why this matters
The Maytag Bravos XL (MVWB series, sister to the Whirlpool Cabrio WTW8xxx) ships a shift actuator (W10913953, supersedes W10006355) that engages the splutch (the splined clutch mechanism between the motor and the basket). When the actuator fails, the washer fills, attempts to agitate, then displays a fault code F7 E1 or a long F-series sensor fault on the control panel. The repair is not technically difficult but two field traps catch new techs: confusing the F7 E1 (shift fault) with F7 E5 (drive motor fault, completely different part), and skipping the calibration cycle after the swap. This procedure assumes a model with the W10913953 actuator (MVWB835DW0 and similar generations).
Confirm the failure before ordering
The F7 E1 code is the specific shift actuator fault. The customer-visible symptoms:
- Washer fills with water but does not agitate or spin
- Washer drains immediately after fill, then refills, repeats (failed splutch position read)
- Control board displays F7 E1 in diagnostic mode
Enter Maytag service diagnostic mode:
- With washer off and plugged in, rotate the cycle selector knob to the 12 o'clock position (often labeled NORMAL)
- Rotate to 3 o'clock, then 6 o'clock, then 9 o'clock within 6 seconds
- The control board enters the service diagnostic menu
- Press TEMP to step through stored fault codes; F7 E1 is the shift actuator fault, F7 E5 is the drive motor, F7 E6 is the basket pump
If F7 E5 appears alone, the drive motor is the problem; do not replace the actuator. If F7 E1 appears alone or with general F-series faults, proceed with actuator replacement.
Parts required
- Maytag W10913953 shift actuator (current part as of 2024)
- 1/4 inch nut driver
- T20 Torx driver
- Phillips head screwdriver
The W10913953 supersedes the earlier W10006355. The connector and mounting bolts are identical; if your shop stock is the older part, it fits.
Disconnect and access
- Unplug the washer from the wall outlet. Do not just turn off the breaker; verify with a voltage tester at the power cord prongs.
- Turn off the hot and cold water supply at the wall.
- Pull the washer 18 inches from the wall to access the rear panel.
- Remove the three 1/4 inch hex screws securing the upper rear access panel (the small panel above the drain hose, not the full rear). Set aside.
Tilt and brace the washer
The shift actuator is mounted under the wash basket on the gearcase. Access requires tilting the washer back onto two boards or onto another technician's foot.
- Empty any water from the basket and drum if a stuck cycle left water behind
- Disconnect the drain hose from the standpipe; drain to a bucket
- Carefully tip the washer back 30 to 45 degrees, supporting the top with a 2x4 against a wall or an assistant
- Locate the shift actuator: black plastic housing approximately 4 inches by 3 inches, mounted on the gearcase directly below the basket
Remove the failed actuator
- Disconnect the electrical harness from the actuator. The connector has a tab; press the tab and pull straight off; do not pull by the wires.
- Remove the three Torx T20 screws securing the actuator housing to the gearcase. The screws have a thread-lock from factory; expect resistance.
- Pull the actuator straight out from the gearcase. The internal gear is splined to mate with the splutch shaft; do not rotate during removal or the spline orientation memory is lost.
- Inspect the actuator gear teeth for stripping. A stripped gear indicates a failed actuator (motor torque exceeded the plastic gear); a worn gear without strips suggests the gear is fine and the failure is the sensor electronics.
Install the new actuator
- Align the new actuator's gear with the splutch shaft. The gear has a flat keyed engagement; rotate the actuator gently until it slides onto the shaft fully.
- Install the three Torx T20 mounting screws, snug then torque sequentially. Do not over-torque; the gearcase housing is aluminum and will strip.
- Reconnect the electrical harness with a positive click.
- Return the washer to vertical position carefully.
Reassembly and calibration
- Reinstall the rear access panel
- Reconnect water supply hoses
- Reconnect the drain hose to the standpipe
- Plug in the power cord
- Enter service diagnostic mode (as above)
- Run the calibration cycle: press the START button while in diagnostic mode, then select the SHIFT ACTUATOR test
- The washer will run a series of fill, drain, agitate, and spin movements with no load to learn the actuator positions
- Calibration takes approximately 8 to 10 minutes. Verify no F-series fault codes appear.
- Exit diagnostic mode (unplug for 10 seconds, then plug in)
First production cycle
Run one full cycle with a half load to verify:
- Fill stops at the correct level
- Agitation engages within 90 seconds of fill complete
- Drain pump runs during drain cycle, water level drops
- Spin engages and ramps to high spin without F-series faults
If F7 E1 reappears, suspect:
- Calibration not completed before first cycle
- Splutch worn (separate W10721967 part, not interchangeable with the actuator)
- Drive motor capacitor failed (some Bravos XL models have a separate motor capacitor)
- Control board sensing issue (rare; replace control board after splutch is verified)
Common installation errors
- Forgetting calibration: the washer will operate but fault codes appear inconsistently for weeks
- Connecting the harness backward: physically not possible due to the keyed connector, but stress on the wires during reconnection can break a conductor
- Over-torquing the mounting screws: cracks the gearcase ear, leaks gearcase oil
- Reusing the old gasket between actuator and gearcase: the gasket is integral to the actuator and not separately supplied
Do not energize the washer while it is tilted back. The water level sensor, the door switch, and the lid lock can deliver inconsistent signals when not vertical, and the diagnostic mode may register false faults that get stored to the EEPROM. Restore vertical position before plugging in.
