LG ThinQ Washer LE Motor Fault Tree
Why this matters
The LE error on LG front-load and top-load direct-drive washers (the ThinQ line and its predecessors) is a locked-motor or motor-overload fault: the control commanded the rotor to move and either did not see the expected rotation feedback or saw a current draw consistent with a stalled motor. Because LG uses a direct-drive motor bolted to the basket with no belt, the LE fault tree covers a tight, specific set of components: the Hall sensor that reports rotor position, the rotor and stator, the motor harness, the main control board's inverter section, and the mechanical condition of the drum (a load wedged against the basket or a failed bearing that the motor cannot turn). Walking these in order, rather than reflexively replacing the board, is what separates a clean LG repair from a parts-cannon callback, because the Hall sensor and harness are far more common LE causes than the board or motor.
Symptom presentation
Customer reports the washer fills, attempts to agitate or spin, then stops and displays LE, often early in the cycle or at the transition into spin. The drum may have moved a little or not at all. On ThinQ units the app mirrors the LE code.
Reproduce by starting a spin-test or running a normal cycle to the point of failure. Note whether the drum is free to spin by hand (power off), whether the failure is at agitation or at spin, and whether LE appears immediately or after some movement.
Quick checks at the door
With power off, open the door and spin the drum by hand. A drum that turns freely points at the sensor/electrical side; a drum that is stiff, grinding, or seized points at mechanical (bearing, foreign object, or a load jammed under the basket). Check for a small item wedged between basket and tub.
Confirm the washer is level and not severely overloaded, and that the shipping bolts (on a newer install) were removed. A unit left with transit bolts in will throw LE because the basket cannot move.
Isolation tree
Branch A (shipping bolts / overload / wedged item): the basket is mechanically prevented from turning. Remove transit bolts, reduce the load, or extract a wedged garment or coin from between basket and tub. Re-run. This is the cheapest and a frequently missed cause on newer installs.
Branch B (Hall sensor fault): the rotor position sensor is the most common electrical LE cause. With power off, access the stator and inspect/test the Hall sensor and its connector. A loose, corroded, or failed Hall sensor connector makes the control think the rotor is not turning. Reseat or replace the Hall sensor and confirm the connector is fully latched.
Branch C (motor harness / connector): the harness from the main board to the stator and Hall sensor can chafe or back out at a connector. Inspect the full motor harness for damage and confirm every connector is seated. A high-resistance or open conductor in this harness produces LE. Repair or replace the harness.
Branch D (rotor / stator fault): a cracked rotor magnet ring, a rotor bolt backed out so the rotor wobbles, or a stator winding fault prevents proper drive. Inspect the rotor for cracks and confirm the rotor center bolt is torqued to spec. Test stator winding resistance and check for shorted windings. Replace rotor or stator as found.
Branch E (main control / inverter board): if the drum spins freely, the Hall sensor and harness test good, and the rotor/stator are sound, the inverter section of the main control board that drives the motor is the remaining cause. Confirm the board commands drive and that the failure follows the board, not the motor. Replace the main control board.
Branch F (tub bearing seized): a drum that is stiff or grinding by hand has a failed tub bearing; the motor cannot turn it and throws LE. Confirm bearing condition. A seized or rough bearing requires a bearing/spider replacement or, depending on model and condition, may push the repair toward a tub assembly decision.
Confirming the diagnosis
After the repair, run LG's spin-test mode (entered via the model's service key sequence) and a full normal cycle, confirming the drum agitates and spins through the full RPM ramp without LE and the app/diagnostics log stays clear. For a Hall sensor or harness fix (Branches B and C), confirm the connector is latched and strain-relieved so it does not back out. For a bearing fix (Branch F), confirm smooth, quiet rotation at full spin.
Remediation by branch
Branch A: remove transit bolts / clear overload / extract wedged item.
Branch B: Hall sensor and connector.
Branch C: motor wiring harness / connectors.
Branch D: rotor or stator assembly; torque rotor bolt to spec.
Branch E: main PCB (inverter control board).
Branch F: tub bearing and spider (or tub assembly per condition).
Notes specific to LG direct drive
LG's direct-drive design means there is no belt, clutch, or transmission in the LE picture, which narrows the tree but raises the stakes on the rotor bolt torque and the Hall sensor connector seating, the two details most often done wrong on a first repair. Always torque the rotor center bolt to the LG service-manual value, and always confirm the Hall sensor connector latches fully; a partial seat passes a bench wiggle test but throws LE under spin vibration.
