KitchenAid Pro-Style Range Igniter Replacement
Why this matters
KitchenAid pro-style ranges (KFGC, KDRS, and the JennAir-shared chassis) use a hot-surface igniter on the oven side and individual spark electrodes on each surface burner driven by a single spark module. When a customer calls in "burner clicks but won't light" or "oven won't heat," the part of the system that failed is rarely the one the customer fingers. The right diagnostic order saves a return trip and protects the customer from a misdiagnosed gas leak.
Surface burner: spark electrode and module
The pro-style cooktop has one electrode per burner plus a single spark module mounted under the cooktop. The module fires all electrodes when any single knob is in the LIGHT position; that is why all burners click when one is turned on. This is normal and not a fault.
Symptom: clicks but no flame. Verify gas pressure at the manifold first. KitchenAid specifies natural gas inlet of 7 inches W.C. minimum, 10.5 W.C. maximum, and LP at 11 W.C. minimum, 13 W.C. maximum (verify against the installation manual for the specific model). If inlet pressure is low, the spark is irrelevant; correct the supply first.
Symptom: one burner won't click while others do. Pull the burner cap and base. Inspect the ceramic electrode for cracks; a hairline crack lets the spark short to ground before it reaches the burner. Replace the electrode; OEM only because the air gap and insulator material are matched to the module output.
Symptom: no burners click. Pull the cooktop (typically 4 to 6 screws around the perimeter). Check the spark module: 120 VAC supply on one harness, switched 120 VAC from the burner knob micro-switches on another, electrode output on the high-voltage leads. If supply is present and one or more switches are calling, but no electrode output, replace the module.
Oven hot-surface igniter
The oven uses a flat carborundum-style hot-surface igniter wired in series with the safety gas valve. The igniter must draw enough current to drop the bimetal in the gas valve and open the valve. As the igniter ages, its resistance climbs and its current draw falls, even though it still glows orange. A glowing igniter that does not open the valve is the classic late-life failure.
Diagnostic procedure:
- Clamp an ammeter on one igniter lead.
- Call for oven bake; the igniter should energize within a few seconds.
- Current should rise to roughly 3.2 to 3.6 amps as the igniter heats (verify the spec on the chassis-specific tech sheet behind the kickplate).
- If current peaks below the gas-valve threshold (typically 2.8 to 3.0 amps on this platform), the valve will not open and the igniter is failed even though it glows.
- Replace the igniter.
Replacement procedure: oven igniter
- Disconnect electrical power at the breaker and shut the gas at the appliance shutoff. Verify with a manometer on the manifold tap that no pressure remains downstream of the shutoff.
- Pull the oven racks and the bottom panel; the igniter mounts to a bracket near the rear of the burner box.
- Disconnect the porcelain connector at the igniter leads. Note routing.
- Remove the two bracket screws and lift the igniter out. Do not touch the carborundum element with bare fingers; skin oils shorten its life dramatically.
- Install the new igniter handling only the bracket. Reconnect the porcelain connector.
- Restore power and gas.
- Verify with a manometer that the manifold pressure is within spec under load (oven calling). 3.5 W.C. is the typical natural-gas manifold spec for these pro-range models; verify against the appliance rating plate.
- Run a full bake cycle to confirm the burner stays lit through cycling.
This is gas work. Any time the gas line is opened, leak-test every joint that was touched with a non-corrosive bubble solution. Per NFPA 54, all joints must be pressure-tested to 1.5 times the working pressure for at least 10 minutes with no observed drop. Local code (IFGC adoption) may require more.
Common mistakes
Replacing the spark module before confirming gas pressure. A clogged regulator drops manifold pressure below light-off threshold; the spark looks weak because the flame can't catch, and the module gets swapped for nothing.
Touching the new oven igniter with bare hands. Skin oils carbonize on first heat-up and create a hot spot that fails the element in weeks.
