Front Load Bearings vs Shock vs Spider Decision Tree

Why this matters

A front-load washer with loud spin, vibration, or basket-rub on the cabinet sits at the intersection of three different end-of-life failures: worn shocks, failed tub bearings, or a corroded spider assembly on the basket-to-shaft mount. The fix for each is dramatically different in labor and parts cost: shocks are a 90-minute repair; bearings are a 4 to 6 hour outer-tub-split job; spider is a basket replacement that on most platforms requires the same outer-tub-split as bearings. Quoting the wrong fix on this call burns customer trust and the shop's hourly economics. The tree below uses three quick observations to triangulate the right answer before pulling the unit apart.

Symptom presentation

Customer reports the washer is loud during spin, walks across the floor on heavy loads, or grinds during agitation. Sometimes the customer reports a rust stain on clothing or in the wash water; this is a strong spider-corrosion indicator. Sometimes the customer reports a deep growl at high RPM; this is a bearing indicator.

Confirm with three observations:

  • Manual rotation feel: with the unit empty, pull the door open and rotate the drum by hand 3 to 5 revolutions. A free-spinning drum with no resistance is normal. A grinding or rumbling sensation under the hand is a bearing failure indicator. A clunk or audible slap on each rotation is a spider indicator.
  • Drum-to-front-flange shake: with the door open, grab the drum at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock and shake fore-aft and side-to-side. Excessive movement (more than a half-inch at the front lip) is a shock or suspension indicator. Movement straight up-and-down with a clunk is a balance-ring or spider indicator.
  • Wash-water inspection: run a short rinse-and-spin with no load. Check the water that drains from the unit. Rust-colored water is a spider-corrosion indicator on aluminum-spider platforms (most front-loads use a cast-aluminum spider that corrodes in the presence of long-standing detergent-water residue).

Quick checks at the door

Pull the kick plate or the rear access panel. Inspect the drain pump filter and the tub-to-pump hose for rust deposits.

Inspect shock absorbers visually. The shocks on most front-load platforms (LG, Samsung, Whirlpool Duet platform, GE) are vertical struts between the outer tub and the cabinet base. A shock that is leaking fluid, broken at a mount, or that compresses with no resistance under hand pressure is failed.

Listen during a sustained spin. A high-pitched whine that rises with RPM is a bearing indicator. A deep growl at constant frequency is also a bearing indicator. A rhythmic thump at the rotation frequency is a spider indicator. A bumping noise that escalates with load size is a shock or suspension indicator.

Isolation tree

Branch A: shake test shows excessive fore-aft or side-to-side movement, shocks visibly leak or compress easily. Replace shocks as a pair (always replace both even if only one is visibly failed; the surviving shock has aged to the same point and will fail soon). Confirm correct shock mounting orientation per the platform service manual.

Branch B: manual rotation shows grinding or rumbling, sustained spin produces high-pitched whine or deep growl. Tub bearings are the failure. On Whirlpool Duet platform and LG / Samsung front-loads, the bearings are pressed into the outer tub housing. The repair requires splitting the outer tub. Many platforms (notably Whirlpool Duet) make the outer tub non-serviceable and require outer-tub assembly replacement; this is a major repair.

Branch C: manual rotation produces a clunk per revolution, wash water shows rust, customer reports clothing rust marks. The aluminum spider behind the basket has corroded and a portion has broken off. The basket must be replaced. This typically requires the same outer-tub-split labor as a bearing repair, plus a new basket assembly.

Branch D: combined indicators (bearings rumble plus spider clunk plus shock weakness). This is end-of-life. The unit has reached the point where multiple major components have aged simultaneously. The labor to repair all three exceeds the cost of a replacement unit on virtually every platform. Quote replacement.

Branch E: shake test normal, manual rotation normal, but excessive vibration at high RPM. The unit may be unlevel or installed on a flexible floor. Confirm leveling and confirm the floor is rigid enough to support spin loads. Some platforms require an anti-vibration pad or a reinforced base; consult the installation manual.

Branch F: rust in wash water but manual rotation normal. Inspect for rust upstream of the basket: the suds-return line, the bleach-dispenser cavity, or the tub-to-pump hose. Customer's clothing-rust complaint can have a non-spider source.

Branch G: customer reports loud spin only on specific cycles (heavy or king-sheets). The unit may be reading the load as balanced when it is not. Confirm by deliberately loading an unbalanced load and running spin; the unit should detect and pause. If it does not, the off-balance sensor or weight-distribution logic has failed and the call is a sensor or board call, not a mechanical call.

Confirming the diagnosis

After shock replacement (Branch A): run a 6 kg test load on spin cycle, measure cabinet vibration with a hand at the top of the cabinet during high-RPM spin. Acceptance is a steady, low-amplitude vibration with no walking and no cabinet impact.

After bearing replacement (Branch B): run an empty drum spin and confirm no whine, no growl, and no vibration above platform spec.

After spider / basket replacement (Branch C): run a rinse-and-spin and confirm wash water exits clean with no rust.

For all branches, confirm normal cycle completion on a full 6 kg load with no abnormal noise or off-balance trips.

Remediation parts list by branch

Branch A: shock absorber kit (pair).

Branch B: outer tub assembly (Whirlpool Duet platform and similar), bearings and seals (platforms with serviceable bearings).

Branch C: basket assembly with spider.

Branch D: no parts; unit replacement.

Branch E: leveling feet adjustment, anti-vibration pad if specified by the manufacturer.

Branch F: bleach-dispenser kit, suds-return line, tub-to-pump hose.

Branch G: off-balance sensor or main control board.

When to quote replacement

A front-load washer older than 8 years with confirmed bearing or spider failure is at the threshold for replacement. The labor charge for an outer-tub split on a modern front-load can equal or exceed the retail price of a current-generation unit, and the customer's existing unit may also need shocks within the next year. Document the diagnosis, parts cost, labor estimate, and the DOE 10 CFR Part 430 efficiency tier of a replacement so the customer's decision is fully informed.
