A refrigerator that holds temperature overnight but warms during a busy day is a recovery-rate problem, not a hard cooling failure, and that distinction reroutes the entire diagnosis. The compressor and sealed system are clearly capable of reaching setpoint, so the question becomes whether the box can recover the heat load that frequent door openings inject before it climbs out of the food-safe band. The two failure families are infiltration (door gasket, hinge sag, gasket overlap, or simple usage pattern) and recovery (weak airflow, partial defrost issues, or marginal charge that only shows under load). Getting the branch right keeps you from condemning a sealed system that is actually fine and from replacing a gasket on a unit whose evaporator airflow is the real limit. The tree below uses temperature behavior under a controlled door-cycling test to split infiltration from recovery.

Symptom presentation

Customer reports the fresh-food compartment reads correct in the morning and climbs to 45 to 50 F by evening on days with heavy use. Freezer is usually unaffected or only mildly warm. No error code on units with diagnostics. Ice cream stays firm but milk and produce warm.

Reproduce with a logged thermometer placed center-shelf, not in the door. Record temperature overnight (no openings) and again across a simulated busy day: open the door for 30 seconds every 20 minutes for two hours, then let the unit recover undisturbed for one hour. A unit that returns to setpoint within roughly 45 minutes after the last opening is recovering normally and the issue is infiltration or usage. A unit that cannot recover within that window has a recovery limit.

Quick checks at the door

Run a dollar-bill test around the full gasket perimeter: close the door on a bill and pull. Uniform light drag means a sealing gasket; a section that pulls free is leaking. Check the door for sag (loose hinge, overloaded door bins) that lifts the gasket off the cabinet at the top corner. Confirm the condenser coil and condenser fan are clean and running; a fouled condenser shows as poor recovery under load while overnight idle cooling still works because the heat-rejection deficit only bites when the compressor must run long.

Verify the customer is not blocking the fresh-food return air vent with packed food, and that the freezer is not overpacked against the evaporator inlet.

Branch A (infiltration confirmed, gasket leaks): replace or reseat the door gasket. A gasket that has lost its magnetic strip set or taken a permanent fold at a corner will not seal even when geometrically aligned. Reform a heat-relaxed gasket with a hair dryer and reseat, or replace if the magnet is dead.

Branch B (infiltration, door sag): tighten or shim the hinge, redistribute door-bin weight, and confirm the cabinet sits level front-to-back so the door self-closes. A door that does not swing shut from a 30 degree open position will be left ajar by a busy household.

Branch C (recovery limit, condenser fouled): clean condenser coil and confirm condenser fan operation. Re-test recovery. Most marginal-recovery units recover normally once heat rejection is restored.

Branch D (recovery limit, condenser clean, weak airflow): inspect the evaporator fan and the evaporator coil for partial frost. A partial defrost fault (defrost heater or thermostat weak, or a defrost control that under-cycles) lets frost accumulate on the evaporator, which chokes airflow and shows first as poor recovery under heavy load before it becomes a full no-cool. Pull the evaporator cover and inspect.

Branch E (recovery limit, airflow good, marginal charge): a slightly undercharged or restricted sealed system can hold an idle box but cannot recover a heavy load. Read suction-line temperature and compressor run pattern. A unit that runs near-continuous yet cannot pull the box down under load, with normal airflow and clean condenser, points at sealed-system capacity loss. Confirm with gauges on an access valve before condemning the sealed system.

Confirming the diagnosis

After gasket or door work (Branches A and B), repeat the door-cycling test and confirm the box recovers to setpoint within the recovery window and holds through the simulated busy day.

For airflow repairs (Branch D), confirm the evaporator clears fully on a defrost cycle and the evaporator fan moves measurable air at the fresh-food vent, then re-run the load test.

For sealed-system findings (Branch E), confirm with low-side reading and compressor amperage against the model service data before quoting recovery of the sealed system. Do not condemn the sealed system on run-time alone.

Remediation by branch

Branch A: door gasket replacement or reform-and-reseat.

Branch B: hinge hardware, leveling, door-bin load coaching.

Branch C: condenser cleaning, condenser fan motor if seized.

Branch D: evaporator fan motor, defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost control board per the failed component.

Branch E: sealed-system service by an EPA Section 608 certified technician; recover, evacuate, weigh in nameplate charge, leak-correct as found.

When it is just usage

Some calls resolve as user behavior: a beverage fridge in a garage during summer, a household that leaves the door open while unloading groceries, or a unit set warmer than the food-safe band. Document the overnight-hold result, show the customer the recovery test, and set realistic expectations. A unit that holds 37 F overnight, seals on the bill test, has a clean condenser, and recovers within the window is performing to design; the fix is behavioral, not parts.
