Dryer Vent Cleaning and Fire-Risk Inspection
Why this matters
The U.S. Fire Administration attributes approximately 2,900 residential dryer fires per year to lint buildup, ignited by an overheated heating element or motor that cannot reject heat through a clogged duct. The mechanism is well documented: lint accumulates in the duct, airflow drops, the dryer's thermal cutoff cycles repeatedly, the safety thermistor eventually fails, and the next fault becomes a fire. A 30-45 minute vent cleaning is one of the lowest-effort, highest-value service calls in appliance repair - customers feel the difference in dry times immediately and the work prevents a measurable safety risk.
When to use this procedure
- Customer reports "dryer takes too long" - the single most diagnostic symptom
- Annual maintenance program
- Move-in inspection on a home with no documented prior service
- Following a thermal-cutoff replacement (clogged vent caused the cutoff)
- Following installation of a new dryer when the existing vent path is unknown
Tools and materials
- Rotary brush kit with extension rods (LintEater or equivalent; 10-15 ft minimum)
- Cordless drill (1/2 inch chuck recommended) to drive the brush
- HEPA-rated wet/dry vacuum
- 4-inch dryer vent brush (handheld) for the dryer-side terminal
- Manometer or anemometer (optional - useful for documenting airflow before/after)
- Replacement vent hood for the exterior wall (carry one or two on the truck)
- Foil-faced or rigid metal 4-inch duct in case the existing duct must be replaced
- Foil tape (not duct tape - duct tape adhesive fails under heat)

Safety
Lint is combustible. The cleaning process itself generates airborne lint that can ignite from a static spark in a poorly grounded vacuum, an open flame on a nearby gas water heater pilot, or a dryer that someone turns on mid-clean. Unplug the dryer (or kill the breaker for a hardwired gas dryer's igniter circuit) and verify there are no open flames in the same air space before starting. Wear an N95 respirator - accumulated dryer lint contains fabric fibers, detergent residue, and skin cells, and your lungs are not the right filter.
Gas dryers add a second hazard: a brittle or kinked flex line behind the dryer can fail when you pull the appliance out to access the vent. Smell-test the connection with leak-detector solution before moving the dryer and again after pushing it back into place. Replace any flex gas line that's been crushed, kinked, or shows oxidation at the fittings.
Procedure
Step 1: Pre-inspection
- Photograph the dryer in place
- Note the vent path - through a wall, up through the ceiling and roof, or down through the floor
- Locate the exterior termination - look for the dryer hood and check for visible lint, bird nests, or a broken damper
- Measure rough vent length - manufacturer specs cap most dryers at 25 ft equivalent length, deducting 5 ft per 90° elbow and 2.5 ft per 45° elbow (IRC M1502.4.4)
- Note the duct material - flexible foil/plastic accordion duct is no longer code-compliant in walls per IRC; rigid or semi-rigid metal only
Step 2: Disconnect the dryer from the vent
- Unplug the dryer; shut off gas supply at the gas dryer shutoff valve
- Pull the dryer 18-24 inches from the wall (use the moving glides if equipped)
- Loosen the clamp at the dryer's rear exhaust port
- Remove the dryer transition duct
- Photograph the lint condition in the transition - that's your "before" customer-education shot
Step 3: Clean the duct from the dryer side
- Vacuum the dryer rear exhaust port and the visible portion of the wall duct
- Insert the rotary brush, attach to drill, run at low speed clockwise
- Push and pull rotating the brush through the entire duct length
- Stop every 5 feet and vacuum out the accumulated lint
- For very long runs or 90° elbows, exit from the exterior side and brush from outside in as well
Step 4: Clean the duct from the exterior
- Open the exterior hood (most have screws holding the louvered cover)
- Vacuum at the termination
- Insert brush from the outside and run as before
- Repair or replace any damaged hood, damper flap, or pest screen - most pest screens are actually code-prohibited (IRC M1502.3 requires no screen), but a damaged damper is the major lint-trap point and must be replaced
Step 5: Inspect and verify the duct material
- Where the duct is visible (basement, crawlspace, unfinished attic), inspect for crushed sections, sagging foil duct, or improper joint connections
- Replace any foil flex duct inside a wall - it's a fire-code violation in most jurisdictions
- The transition duct (the section from dryer to wall) must be UL 2158A listed semi-rigid foil or rigid metal - never PVC, never standard accordion plastic foil
Step 6: Reconnect and verify airflow
- Reinstall the transition duct with screw-style clamps (no sheet-metal screws penetrating the duct interior - they catch lint)
- Push the dryer back into position, mindful of the gas line
- For gas dryers, soap-test the gas connection
- Plug in, restore breaker
- Run the dryer empty on a heat cycle for 5 minutes
- Walk to the exterior termination - feel airflow at the hood
- If you have an anemometer, document airflow before-and-after for the customer file
Step 7: Customer education
- Show the customer the bag of lint you removed
- Explain that lint accumulates fastest in homes with pets, multiple kids, or fleece/microfiber-heavy laundry
- Recommend annual cleaning as a maintenance service
- Demonstrate the dryer's lint screen and ask if they clean it after every load - this is the first line of defense
Acceptance criteria
- Lint volume removed documented (photo or bag weight)
- Airflow restored at the exterior termination
- Duct material code-compliant throughout the visible portion of the run
- No exposed flex duct inside walls
- Customer signs off after observing one normal dryer cycle
Common pitfalls
- Skipping the exterior side - most lint accumulates at the hood and the last 5 feet
- Reinstalling foil flex transition duct as "good enough" - the customer's next-cycle fire risk is on you if you knowingly leave non-compliant duct
- Sheet-metal screws penetrating the duct - those screws point inward and snag every lint fiber that passes; use foil-tape joints
- Not soap-testing gas reconnection - a slow gas leak behind the dryer is invisible until the customer smells it
- Cleaning without unplugging - accidental dryer start with the brush in the duct destroys the brush and possibly the dryer
