Dryer Takes Too Long - Diagnostic Tree

Symptom

Customer reports clothes take 2 - 3 cycles to dry, or run forever and come out damp. The dryer is "working" (heat + tumble), but the result is poor. 95 % of these calls are about VENTING, not the dryer itself. Cleaning the vent is the highest-ROI residential appliance service in the industry - and prevents fires.

Likely Causes

In rough order of frequency for residential service:

  • Clogged vent run (lint accumulation between dryer + exterior) - 60 % of "too long" calls
  • Crushed or kinked vent duct (often flex vinyl pinched behind dryer) - 15 %
  • Damaged or missing exterior vent cap (won't open or is blocked) - 8 %
  • Failed heating element (electric) or burner (gas) - 5 %
  • Failed high-limit thermostat (cycles off prematurely) - 4 %
  • Failed thermistor (sensor-dry models read wrong) - 3 %
  • Worn drum belt (slipping, slower tumble) - 2 %
  • Failed blower wheel (broken vanes) - 2 %
  • Other (mis-sorted loads, overloaded drum) - 1 %

Diagnostic Steps

  1. Test the airflow first.
  • Pull the vent duct off the dryer outlet
  • Hold a tissue paper to the dryer's outlet with the dryer running
  • Strong airflow → dryer is fine; problem is in the duct or exterior cap
  • Weak airflow → internal dryer issue (filter, blower, restricted internal path)
  1. For weak internal airflow:
  • Clean the lint screen + the housing behind it (deep vacuum)
  • Pull off the back panel; check blower wheel for broken vanes or accumulated lint
  1. For dryer-side OK, vent-side suspect:
  • Run a vent-cleaning rod set through the entire vent run from dryer to exterior
  • Document the volume of lint removed (photograph + bag it for the customer)
  • Inspect the exterior cap - should open visibly with dryer running
  1. For visibly clear vent + still slow drying:
  • Test heating element / gas burner. Should reach operating temp quickly + sustain.
  • For electric: continuity test on the element (should read 8 - 15 Ω depending on model)
  • For gas: visible blue flame in the burner box, igniter glowing on each cycle
  1. Test temperature sensor. Modern dryers cycle the heat based on thermistor reading. A failed thermistor reads high → dryer cycles heat off too early → clothes feel damp.
  2. Check thermal fuse (electric dryers) - one-time fuse that pops if dryer overheated. Replacement is straightforward; finding what caused the overheat (clogged vent) is the actual fix.

Resolution

  • Crushed vent duct: replace with rigid metal or semi-rigid metal duct. Flexible vinyl is a code violation in most jurisdictions.
  • Failed high-limit thermostat: replace + identify the overheat root cause (always a clogged vent).
  • Broken blower wheel: replace blower assembly.

A dryer that runs hot for hours because the vent is clogged is what causes residential dryer fires (NFPA: ~3,000 per year, 5 deaths). Cleaning the vent isn't just a service - it's a fire-prevention requirement. Document the cleaning + lint volume in the customer file; it's an insurance-defensible record if a future fire is investigated.

Prevention

  • Customer education: clean lint screen EVERY load + replace vinyl duct with metal
  • Sticker on the dryer with "Last vent service: [date]" so the customer remembers the next service date
