A failed element gives no heat from second one; heat that arrives, runs, then quits after a delay means a protective device is opening once the system reaches its trip temperature, which only happens after the cabinet and exhaust have had time to heat. The delay points squarely at airflow: when air cannot carry heat away fast enough, exhaust and cabinet temperature climb past the high-limit or cycling-thermostat trip point at the predictable time it takes to soak. A partially shorted element that draws high and overheats locally produces the same delayed-trip pattern. Reproduce with an exhaust thermometer placed just past the blower. Time the run: note the elapsed minutes to heat loss and read the exhaust temperature at the moment heat drops. A trip near the high-limit value at a consistent time confirms a thermal trip rather than a random element failure.

Quick checks at the door

Clean the lint filter and inspect the housing and chute. A clogged filter is the most common airflow-driven cause and produces exactly this delayed trip. Then disconnect the vent at the dryer and run a free-vented test: if heat now holds past fifteen minutes, the household vent is restricted.

Confirm the vent termination flap moves and the transition hose is not crushed. Feel exhaust airflow at the termination; weak airflow at the wall while the dryer runs confirms a vent restriction even before instrumenting.

For an element replacement, confirm element-to-ground is open-circuit (no short) and resistance is in spec. Confirm the load comes out dry.
