Disposal Hums No Spin vs No Power Decision Tree

Why this matters

A garbage disposal that hums but does not spin is a different fault from a disposal that has no power and is silent, and treating them as the same call costs unnecessary parts. Hum-no-spin is almost always a jammed grinding chamber, a failed start capacitor on capacitor-start motor platforms, or a worn motor bearing. No-power-silent is almost always a tripped thermal reset, a tripped GFCI / breaker, or a failed switch. The tree below routes from the two symptoms to the right verification step before any parts get sold.

Symptom presentation

Customer reports either:

  • "The disposal hums but does not work." Walk this as Branch A through D.
  • "The disposal is dead, nothing happens." Walk this as Branch E through H.

Confirm by listening at the disposal flange with the switch on. A humming sound with no shaft rotation is the hum-no-spin call. Total silence with no hum is the no-power call.

Quick checks at the door

For hum-no-spin: cut power at the wall switch before any chamber access. Inspect the chamber for visible foreign material (silverware, bottle caps, fruit pits, bones, glass shards). Use a flashlight; do not put a hand into the chamber even after power is cut.

For no-power-silent: confirm power at the wall switch with a voltage tester. Confirm the disposal is connected at the outlet under the sink (some disposals plug into a switched outlet; others are hard-wired). Test the breaker at the panel.

For both: locate and inspect the disposal's thermal reset button on the bottom of the unit. Most disposals (InSinkErator, Waste King, Moen) have a red reset button that pops out when the internal thermal switch trips. A popped reset is the single most common cause of "dead disposal" calls.

Isolation tree

Branch A (hum-no-spin): jammed grinding chamber. Use the manufacturer-supplied hex wrench (most platforms ship a 1/4 inch hex wrench that fits the bottom shaft socket) to manually rotate the shaft back and forth. The shaft should free up if the jam is a foreign object. Remove the object from the chamber with tongs (power must be off and locked out). Press the thermal reset, restore power, test.

Branch B (hum-no-spin, no jam, shaft turns by hand): the start capacitor has failed on capacitor-start platforms. The motor windings can hum on the run winding alone but cannot start without the start capacitor. Discharge and replace the capacitor (typical 30 to 60 microfarad at 220 to 250 V; consult the model spec).

Branch C (hum-no-spin, shaft turns by hand, capacitor is good or non-capacitor-start motor): worn motor bearings have seized. The motor hums but the shaft will not free even with manual rotation. Replace the disposal (motor replacement on residential disposals is rarely cost-effective; the unit goes to recycling and a new disposal is installed).

Branch D (hum-no-spin, intermittent): the centrifugal start switch on PSC and CSCR motors is worn. The motor starts sometimes and stalls other times. Replace the disposal.

Branch E (no-power-silent, thermal reset popped): press the reset. If the reset will not stay engaged, the thermal switch has tripped from an overheated motor and the motor must cool 15 to 20 minutes before the reset will hold. If the reset will not hold after cooldown, the thermal switch is defective; replace the disposal.

Branch F (no-power-silent, reset holds, no voltage at the unit): the switch is failed or the outlet is dead. Test the switch for continuity with the switch in the on position. Test the outlet for 120 V. Replace switch or repair the outlet.

Branch G (no-power-silent, voltage at the unit but motor does not run): internal motor wiring break or end-of-life motor. Replace the disposal.

Branch H (no-power-silent, hardwired install): check the wire-nut splices in the connection box on the bottom of the disposal. Loose or burned connections are a common no-power cause on hardwired installs that have been disturbed by under-sink work.

Confirming the diagnosis

After repair, run the disposal with cold water flowing and grind a soft test load (a slice of bread, a few ice cubes). Confirm normal grinding sound and immediate startup with no hum-stall.

For Branch A (jam), inspect the chamber after the test grind and confirm no metal shavings, no plastic, and no remaining foreign material.

For Branch B (capacitor), confirm the disposal starts on every switch-on for 5 consecutive trials with no hesitation.

For Branch E (reset), confirm the reset stays engaged for 24 hours and the customer does not report a second trip.

Remediation parts list by branch

Branch A: no parts; jam removal labor.

Branch B: start capacitor (correct microfarad and voltage rating per model spec).

Branch C, D, G: disposal replacement.

Branch E: no parts if reset holds after cooldown; disposal replacement if reset will not hold.

Branch F: switch, outlet repair.

Branch H: wire nuts, electrical splice; do not reuse a damaged supply pigtail.

When to escalate

A disposal that has been jammed three times in 12 months is a customer-habit conversation. Common over-grind items: fibrous vegetables (celery, corn husks), starchy items in volume (potato peels, pasta), grease, and any non-food object. The disposal is a consumable; abuse shortens its life. Set the expectation in writing.

A disposal hardwired install on a circuit that also feeds other loads can produce nuisance breaker trips that look like "no power" calls. Confirm the disposal is on a dedicated circuit per NEC Article 422 requirements for fixed motor loads if the customer has reported multiple trip events.

Always cut power at the breaker before reaching into the disposal chamber. The flange opening is large enough for a hand to enter, and an inadvertent switch trigger from a child or roommate during service has caused amputation injuries. Lock out the breaker if you leave the unit unattended during service.
