Dishwasher Not Cleaning Only Bottom Rack Spray Vs Pump Decision Tree

Why this matters

A dishwasher that cleans the upper rack acceptably but leaves the bottom rack dirty is reporting a problem in the lower-spray feed or in the wash pump's ability to pressurize the lower arm, and the upper-rack performance is itself a clue. If the upper rack is getting clean, the pump is moving water and the supply tower is feeding the top, so the fault is concentrated at the lower spray arm, its feed, or a flow split that starves the bottom while the top still works. The branch decisions separate a blocked or stalled lower spray arm from a wash pump that has lost prime or pressure from a clogged filter that starves the pump intake. Recognizing which it is keeps the tech from replacing a pump when the real fault is a five-minute spray-arm clean, and from chasing the upper feed when the bottom is the only complaint.

Symptom presentation

Customer reports the bottom rack comes out with food still on it while the top rack is reasonably clean, or the reverse pattern after a recent change. Glasses and cups on top look acceptable; plates and pots on the bottom do not. Often no fault code; some units post a no-flow or pump fault if the pump is truly failing.

Confirm by loading a controlled soil test, marked dishes top and bottom, and running a normal cycle. A clean top with a dirty bottom isolates the lower-spray branch; a dirty top and bottom points instead at the pump or supply tower and a different tree.

Quick checks at the door

Pull the lower rack and remove the lower spray arm. Check that it spins freely with no wobble or binding, and clear every nozzle of debris and mineral scale with a pick or wire. A clogged or stalled lower arm is the single most common cause of bottom-only poor cleaning.

Pull and clean the filter assembly and the sump screen. A clogged fine filter starves the pump intake and drops lower-arm pressure first. Inspect the sump for food debris, glass, or a stuck check valve that bleeds pressure.

Branch A (lower spray arm clogged or not spinning): nozzles packed with food, hard-water scale, or a label fragment stop the lower arm from spinning and spraying. Clean every jet and confirm free rotation on its bearing. A cracked arm or a worn bearing hub that lets the arm drag also starves coverage; replace if cracked or sloppy.

Branch B (filter or sump clogged, pump starved): a fouled filter or a sump packed with debris reduces the water the pump can move, and the lower arm loses pressure before the upper feed does. Deep-clean the filter, screen, and sump. Confirm the chopper or grinder area is clear on models that have one.

Branch C (wash pump weak or impeller worn): a wash pump with a worn or cracked impeller, a slipping coupling, or a partially seized motor moves less water and pressurizes the lower arm poorly even with a clean arm and filter. Listen for a laboring pump, check current draw if accessible, and inspect the impeller. Replace the worn pump or impeller.

Branch D (diverter valve stuck favoring upper feed): many modern dishwashers alternate flow between upper and lower arms with a diverter. A diverter stuck toward the upper feed starves the lower arm during its share of the cycle. Command or observe the diverter through the cycle; a stuck or failed diverter motor needs replacement.

Branch E (low fill or inlet starvation): a partial fill from a weak inlet valve or a clogged inlet screen leaves too little water for the pump to fully pressurize the lower arm. Confirm fill volume and inlet flow; correct a starved fill before condemning the pump. The lower arm is starved first on a low fill because it sits at the bottom of the sump and the pump loses prime there before the upper feed is affected.

Branch F (lower arm feed seal or coupling leaking): on units where the lower arm mounts to a feed tube or a wash-tower coupling at the sump, a worn feed seal, a cracked coupling, or a lower arm not fully seated bleeds pressure into the tub instead of out the nozzles. The arm may spin weakly or wobble. Inspect the lower-arm mount and its seal, confirm the arm clicks fully home, and replace a worn seal or cracked feed fitting. This presents as a clean top and a poorly washed bottom even with a clear arm and good pump, because the pressure is lost at the connection.

Branch G (wash temperature too low for the cycle): if water never reaches wash temperature, food fats and starches do not release and the heaviest-soiled lower-rack items stay dirty while lightly soiled upper items pass. Confirm the inlet water temperature and, on units with a wash heater, that the element raises water to target during the heat step. A failed wash heater leaves the bottom rack dirty even with perfect spray mechanics.

Confirming the diagnosis

After the repair, run a soil test with marked dishes top and bottom and confirm the bottom rack now cleans to the same standard as the top. Confirm the lower spray arm spins through the cycle (a brief door-interlock-defeated observation or a service-mode spray test) and that fill volume and pump sound are normal. Hard-water units should also be checked for scale recurrence and rinse-aid use.

Confirm wash temperature and inspect the sump and tower for hairline cracks before condemning the control.
