Dishwasher Leaves Film vs Spots Decision Tree

Why this matters

The "dishes come out dirty" complaint splits into two distinct failure modes that look superficially similar but have completely different remediation paths. Film is a chemistry problem. Spots are a drying problem. Misclassifying the symptom triggers a parts cannon - a new circulation pump on what is actually a rinse-aid dispenser issue, or a heating element on what is actually well water with no softener. The decision tree below isolates film versus spots in the first three minutes, then runs each branch to the actual root cause.

Symptom presentation

Pull a clean glass from the top rack at end-of-cycle and inspect under angled light:

  • Film: uniform white or grayish haze across the surface. Survives a fingernail scrape - the haze is on the glass, not in the water residue. Can be permanent if etching has occurred. Repeat across multiple loads.
  • Spots: discrete water-droplet-shaped marks, usually clear in the center with a mineral ring at the edge. Wipes clean with a dry microfiber. Pattern matches where droplets dwelled on the surface during the dry cycle.
  • Both: hard water plus failed rinse-aid system. Common in well-water markets without a softener.

Ask the customer two questions before opening the dishwasher: water source (city or well) and dishwasher detergent type (powder, gel, pod). Pod users running on hard water are the modal "film" caller. City-water customers complaining of new-onset spots are usually rinse-aid or vent failures.

Quick checks (under 10 minutes)

  • Rinse-aid dispenser fill level. If empty, fill, run a cycle, reinspect. Resolves 40% of spots calls.
  • Water hardness with a quick-test strip. Anything above 7 grains-per-gallon (gpg) needs softening or detergent compensation per the OEM use guide. Above 15 gpg is hard enough to defeat any detergent.
  • Incoming water temperature. The OEM spec is 120F at the inlet. Most water heaters are set to 110-115F to limit scald risk. A cold inlet kills detergent dissolution and causes both film and spots.
  • Detergent type and dose. Powder lets the user tune dose to hardness; pods are fixed-dose and over-soap soft water while under-soap hard water. Pod users on the wrong end of either spectrum will see persistent symptoms.
  • Vent door (vented-dry models) closes during wash, opens during dry. A stuck-closed vent traps humid air = persistent spots.

Isolation tree

Branch 1 - Hard water + powder/gel detergent (~30% of film calls). Customer dose is too low for hardness. Raise dose toward maximum per OEM and reinspect after three cycles. If still filmy, the detergent product is exhausted - escalate to a phosphate-restored product (commercial-grade) or recommend point-of-use softener.

Branch 2 - Hard water + pod detergent (~20%). Pods cannot be dosed. The realistic options are softener, switch to powder/gel, or supplement with a tablespoon of citric acid in the prewash slot. Document the limitation; the dishwasher is not the fault.

Branch 3 - Etched glass (~15% of film). Soft water plus alkaline detergent permanently etches glassware. The "film" is microscopic surface erosion. Cannot be reversed - the glass is gone. Lower detergent dose, switch to a less alkaline product, and educate the customer. New glassware will etch in 6-12 months on soft water if dose is not corrected.

Branch 4 - Failed rinse-aid dispenser (~20% of spots). Dispenser mechanism does not release rinse aid on cycle command. Visible test: fill dispenser, mark fluid level, run a full cycle, recheck level. No drop = mechanism failed. Replace dispenser assembly.

Branch 5 - Failed vent door or vent fan (~15% of spots). Vented-dry models on Whirlpool, KitchenAid, GE platforms. Bimetal-actuated vent door stuck closed or fan motor seized. Run a heat cycle and check for warm humid air discharge at the upper door vent within 10 minutes of the dry cycle starting.

Branch 6 - Heated dry off or failed heating element (~10%). Customer disabled heated dry to save energy and now complains of spots. Re-enable. If enabled and not heating, ohm the element (typical 15-25 ohms). Open element = no dry heat.

Branch 7 - Condensing-dry models with cold final rinse (~5%). Bosch and Miele use condensing dry without a heating element - they rely on a hot final rinse heating the stainless tub, then condensing on the cooler tub walls after the door is opened. If the heater fails the rinse runs cold and the dishes stay wet. Diagnose via the OEM service mode showing final rinse temperature.

Branch 8 - Soft water spots (rare, ~3%). Soft water plus high rinse-aid dose creates micro-droplets that look like spots. Reduce rinse-aid to minimum and retest.

Confirming diagnosis

  • Hard water film: test strip in the supply, repeat after three cycles at maximum dose. If film persists at max dose with cold-rinse boost, the chemistry is at its limit and the answer is softening, not service.
  • Etching: acid bath test. Submerge a filmed glass in white vinegar for 30 minutes. Etching is unchanged; mineral film clears. This is the definitive test and worth doing in front of the customer to set expectations.
  • Rinse-aid dispenser: marked fluid level pre/post cycle.
  • Vent door: visual inspection during the dry cycle, listen for fan motor on vent-fan models. Stuck door has visible damage at the wax-motor actuator.
  • Heating element: ohm cold, observe heat output during cycle with an IR thermometer aimed at the tub bottom. Tub bottom should reach 140-150F during dry on heated-dry models.
  • Condensing dry tank temp: OEM service mode readout. Bosch dishwashers show fault codes for final-rinse heater faults; pull the codes per the tech sheet behind the kickplate.

Cutoff guidance: chemistry calls do not get parts. Document the diagnosis as "operator/water-chemistry" and bill the diagnostic. Customers sometimes push for a part swap to "rule it out"; refuse politely. The wrong part fix becomes a callback that costs you twice.
