Dishwasher Common Repairs
Why this matters
Dishwashers are second only to refrigerators in service-call volume. Common failure categories
- Won't drain - drain pump failure, drain hose clog, air gap clog, garbage disposal connection

- Won't fill - water inlet valve, float switch, supply line, leaking solenoid
- Poor cleaning - spray arm spinning, water heater, detergent dispenser, water temperature
- Noisy operation - pump, motor bearings, spray arm, debris in chopper
- Control board / display fault - board failure, button stuck, sensor fault
Failure 1: Won't drain
Step 1: Garbage disposal connection
- 60%+ of dishwasher drain calls trace to garbage disposal
- The knockout plug at the disposal inlet must be removed when dishwasher first connected (often missed by builder OR DIY install)
- Check: disconnect drain hose at disposal; verify clear path through disposal
Step 2: Drain hose
- Pull dishwasher out (carefully - kick plate first, then anchor screws to cabinet)
- Inspect drain hose for kink, crush, or sag (must rise to high-loop attachment)
- Disconnect hose; check for clog (food debris, broken glass commonly)
- Reconnect with proper high loop (12 - 18" above floor of cabinet OR air gap install)
Step 3: Drain pump
- Access drain pump from inside (remove lower spray arm + lower filter assembly)
- Pull pump cover; check impeller for debris (broken glass, plastic, food)
- Test pump electrically: 120V at terminals on drain cycle
- Replace pump if seized OR no electrical response
Step 4: Air gap (where local code requires)
- Inspect air gap on countertop
- Cap pulls off; check inlet + outlet ports for debris
Failure 2: Leaks
Door seal
- Inspect door gasket - split, hardened, deformed
- Replace if degraded; clean seating channel
Wash arm seal
- Upper or lower spray arm bushing leaks dribble inside cabinet, find their way to base
- Replace bushing
Sump gasket
- The wash motor seal at the base of the tub
- Symptoms: water under dishwasher
Hose fittings
- Inspect inlet valve fitting + drain hose connections
- Tighten OR replace clamps
Failure 3: Won't start / no power
Step 1: Power confirmed
- Test outlet at sink under cabinet OR confirm circuit breaker
- If hardwired, test 120V at junction box
Step 2: Door switch
- Door switches are mechanical; fail at 5 - 10 year mark
- Test continuity with door closed: should close circuit
- Replace if open
Step 3: Thermal fuse / TCO
- Most dishwashers have a one-shot thermal fuse on the control panel
- Trips on over-temp (typically caused by failed heating element OR runaway controller)
- Replace fuse + investigate root cause
- If fuse trips again immediately, the cause hasn't been found
Step 4: Control board
- Most modern dishwashers have a single board (Bosch + Whirlpool + GE all similar)
- Diagnostic code on display (most brands)
- Common failure: button-press not recognized; board needs replacement
Failure 4: Won't fill
Water inlet valve
- Test 120V at valve solenoid during fill cycle
- If 120V present + no water = valve failed; replace
- If no 120V = upstream (control board OR float switch)
Float switch
- Float chamber inside the tub; lifts to shut off fill when water reaches level
- Stuck float (debris, mineral buildup) = valve commanded shut early
- Clean OR replace
Supply line
- Sediment in fine mesh inlet filter at valve
- Disconnect supply line; clean filter
- Verify supply flow at line end
Failure 5: Poor cleaning
Spray arms
- Verify arms spin freely (lift + rotate by hand)
- Inspect for clogged spray holes (toothpick or thin wire to clear)
- Check arm bushing for wear
Water temperature
- Test wash water temp during heat-rinse cycle - should be 130 - 140°F
- If low, water heater issue OR heating element in dishwasher failed
- Many modern dishwashers rely entirely on inlet water temp; recommend customer set water heater to 120 - 140°F
Detergent dispenser
- Dispenser cover should open during cycle
- Failed wax-motor or solenoid = detergent doesn't dispense
- Test mechanism
Failure 6: Noisy operation
Pump / motor bearings
- Grinding noise + occasional whine = worn motor bearings
- Replace pump + motor as assembly
Chopper jam
- Some dishwashers have a chopper blade to mince food before draining
- Glass shard or hard object jams chopper = grinding noise + may trip motor
- Disassemble + clear
Spray arm hitting dish
- Sometimes a tall item interferes
- User education on loading
Failure 7: Control board / display
- Diagnostic code displayed: reference manufacturer code list
- Common: Bosch E15 (leak detected - flood pan switch tripped), Whirlpool F3 E1 (thermistor), GE E1 (water inlet)
The single highest-value diagnostic move on a noisy or poor-cleaning dishwasher is removing the LOWER FILTER ASSEMBLY + CLEANING IT. Most owners never clean the filter; it's loaded with food debris, mineral scale, + occasional glass. A 10-minute clean-out restores wash performance + reduces noise dramatically. Decision: repair vs replace
- Machine <5 years: repair almost always
- Machine 5 - 10 years: repair if cost <50% of replacement
- Machine 10+ years: case-by-case; expect more failures
- Premium brand (Miele, Bosch, KitchenAid): higher repair threshold
- Builder-grade brand: replace at first major failure typically
