Customer Says "Dryer Takes Forever": Translation Decision Tree

Why this matters

"Takes forever to dry" is the highest-volume dryer complaint, and the great majority of these calls are not a broken dryer at all, they are airflow. A clogged vent, a crushed transition hose, or a packed lint screen strangles the dryer so it tumbles hot, wet air it cannot exhaust. The rest split between partial heat loss (one of two heating elements or one leg of 240 V power gone) and a control/sensing fault. Translating "forever" into a measured airflow and heat reading first prevents the classic mistake: selling a heating element to a dryer whose vent is the real problem, then getting the callback when it still takes two hours. Airflow is also a fire-safety issue, so this complaint is never purely a convenience call.

Symptom presentation

The customer reports cycles that run far longer than they used to, clothes still damp at the end, or the cabinet and clothes running unusually hot. Underneath: a strangled vent (long runs, hot exterior, lint everywhere), partial heat (warm but not hot, electric units on one leg), or a sensing/control fault (cycle ends early on damp clothes, or runs full time with no auto-stop).

Quick checks

  • Pull the lint screen and check it; then disconnect the vent at the dryer and run it venting to open air. If drying time normalizes vented to air, the problem is downstream venting, not the dryer.
  • Feel the exhaust airflow at the exterior hood while running; weak flow with the lint screen clean confirms a blocked vent or crushed transition.
  • Confirm the dryer heats: is the air hot, warm, or cold? "Warm but never hot" on an electric dryer points to partial heat (one element coil or one 240 V leg).
  • On electric dryers, verify both legs of 240 V are present at the outlet; a lost leg gives the motor 120 V (runs) but no heat or weak heat.
  • Check that the moisture-sensor bars (auto-dry models) are clean; fabric-softener film on the bars makes the dryer end cycles early or run long.

Isolation tree

  1. Does drying time normalize when vented to open air (vent disconnected)? The dryer is fine; the venting is the fault. Inspect the full vent run for lint packing, crushed/kinked flexible transition, a bird-screen or pest blockage at the hood, and excessive length or too many elbows. Clean or replace the vent and transition. This is the single most common cause of "takes forever."
  2. Does it still take forever vented to open air, and the air is only WARM (electric)? Partial heat. Verify both 240 V legs at the outlet/terminal block: a lost leg (open breaker pole, burned outlet contact, loose terminal) leaves the motor running on 120 V with little or no heat. If both legs are present, test the heating element for a partially open/grounded coil and the high-limit/cycling thermostats.
  3. Vented to air and the air is COLD (no heat at all, electric)? No-heat path: open heating element, blown thermal fuse, open high-limit thermostat, or a lost 240 V leg. (No-heat is a separate fault from slow drying; if the complaint is purely slow with some heat, stay on step 2.)
  4. Gas dryer, weak or no heat? Check the igniter, gas valve coils, and flame sensor; a glow-igniter that lights but the valve will not open, or coils that cycle the flame off too soon, gives weak heat and long cycles.
  5. Plenty of heat and good airflow, but cycles end early or run forever on auto? Moisture-sensing fault. Clean the sensor bars (softener film insulates them), and test the sensor/control: dirty bars read "dry" and stop early; a shorted sensor or control reads "wet" forever.
  6. Drum barely turns or tumbles slowly? A worn drum belt, bad rollers/glides, or a weak blower wheel reduces tumbling and airflow; clothes mat and dry slowly. Inspect the belt, rollers, and blower.

Confirming diagnosis

Confirm with the vented-to-air test plus a heat and power reading. Venting fault: time normalizes vented to air, exterior airflow weak, lint-packed run. Partial heat: warm-not-hot air with one 240 V leg missing or a partially open element. No heat: cold air with an open element/fuse/thermostat. Gas weak heat: igniter or valve-coil fault on a gas unit. Sensing fault: good heat and airflow but auto-dry ends early (dirty bars) or never stops (shorted sensor). Mechanical: visibly slow drum or a worn blower.

Remediation

  • Venting: clean the full vent run and hood, replace a crushed/kinked transition with smooth rigid or semi-rigid duct, shorten excessive runs, and reduce elbows; clean the lint screen and explain the safety/efficiency reason.
  • Partial heat (electric): restore the lost 240 V leg (repair the outlet, terminal block, or breaker), or replace a partially open/grounded heating element.
  • No heat (electric): replace the open element, thermal fuse, or thermostat after correcting the airflow cause that often blew them.
  • Gas: replace the failed igniter, valve coils, or flame sensor.
  • Sensing: clean the moisture-sensor bars; replace a faulty sensor or control if readings stay wrong after cleaning.
  • Mechanical: replace a worn belt, rollers/glides, or blower wheel.

A blocked dryer vent is a fire hazard; lint accumulation and overheating cause dryer fires every year. Electric dryers run on 240 V, and the heating element, terminal block, and thermal cutoffs are line-voltage. Unplug the dryer and verify zero voltage before servicing. For gas dryers, confirm the gas supply is shut off before opening the burner area and test for leaks after any reconnection.
