Customer Forced Door Now Interlock Fault Decision Tree
Why this matters
When a customer yanks open a microwave, front-load washer, or dryer door against a locked latch, they almost always damage the interlock system that keeps the appliance from running with the door open. These interlocks are not convenience switches; they are the legally required safety barrier that cuts power to a magnetron, a spinning drum, or a heating element the instant the door opens. A forced door bends latch hooks, breaks the plastic actuator that trips the switches, cracks a switch body, or knocks a switch out of alignment so it no longer reads door-closed. The control then reports a door or interlock fault and refuses to run, which is the system working as designed. This tree finds the broken link in the interlock chain and restores it to spec, because a microwave that runs with a defeated interlock can leak microwave energy and a washer that spins with the door open can injure the user.
Symptom presentation
After the door was forced, the appliance shows a door, lid, or interlock fault and will not start, or it starts and immediately stops. A microwave may blow its line fuse the moment the door closes because the monitor (interlock) switch and the primary switch are now out of sequence. A front-load washer reports a door-lock fault and will not fill or spin. The owner reports the door was stuck and they pulled it open hard, which is the event that defines this tree. The latch may feel loose, rattle, or fail to catch.
Quick checks
Inspect the latch hooks and the door strike for bending, cracks, or a snapped actuator finger. On a microwave, the door has two or three series switches (primary interlock, secondary interlock, and a monitor switch) that must actuate in a precise order; a bent latch hook trips them out of sequence and either prevents start or blows the line fuse via the monitor circuit. Open the cabinet (with power removed) and read each switch for correct open/closed action as the latch engages. On a front-load washer, the door lock assembly is a solenoid-and-switch module; check that the strike still engages the lock and that the lock reports locked to the control. Look for a cracked lock housing or a bent strike. Confirm the door closes squarely and the gasket seats; a sprung hinge from the force can hold the door slightly proud so the latch never fully engages.
A microwave oven interlock prevents emitter operation with the door open and is a federal radiation-safety requirement. Never bypass, jumper, or defeat any microwave interlock or monitor switch to make the unit run. After any door, latch, or switch repair on a microwave, the unit must be verified for proper interlock sequencing and, where the customer relies on emission integrity, microwave leakage tested with a calibrated survey meter before return to service. Replace damaged interlock parts only with OEM equivalents.
Isolation tree
Branch 1, latch and actuator. A bent or broken latch hook or actuator finger fails to trip the switches. Inspect and replace the latch assembly. If the new latch trips all switches in correct sequence and the fault clears, the mechanical latch was the fault.
Branch 2, interlock switches. A switch cracked or knocked out of position by the force reads wrong even with a good latch. Read each switch independently for clean open/closed transitions as the latch actuates. Replace any switch that does not transition cleanly. On microwaves, replace all door switches as a set when one is damaged, since the monitor relies on exact sequencing.
Branch 3, washer door lock module. A solenoid lock with a cracked housing or a worn strike will not report locked. Read the lock switches and the solenoid coil resistance against the tech sheet, and confirm the control sees the locked state. Replace the lock module if it does not lock and report reliably.
Branch 4, door alignment and hinge. A sprung hinge holds the door so the latch cannot fully seat, producing an interlock fault no switch replacement will fix. Check hinge squareness and door flushness against the cabinet, adjust or replace the hinge, and confirm the latch fully engages and trips every switch. On a front-load washer, a dropped door from a worn hinge bushing also strains the lock strike and is a common force-related casualty.
Branch 5, blown line fuse and downstream damage (microwave). When the monitor switch fires, it blows the line (thermal or ceramic) fuse and may take the monitor switch contacts with it. Read the line fuse and the monitor switch after correcting the latch; a fuse that blows again immediately on door close means the switches are still out of sequence. Replace the line fuse and any welded monitor switch as a set with the other door switches, and verify the latch trips them in the designed order before applying power again.
Confirming diagnosis
Confirm by cycling the door several times and watching the interlock chain. On a microwave, all primary, secondary, and monitor switches must transition in the correct order without blowing the line fuse, and the unit must not energize the magnetron until the door is fully closed and latched. On a washer, the door must lock, report locked, run, and unlock only after the cycle and drum stop. The fault must stay cleared across repeated open/close cycles. Anything intermittent means a marginal switch or latch remains.
Remediation
Replace bent latches, cracked or misaligned switches, and damaged washer lock modules with OEM parts, and correct any hinge or alignment that prevents full latch engagement. On microwaves, replace door switches as a set, replace any blown line fuse, and verify sequencing before powering up. Run the appliance through a full cycle to confirm the interlock holds and releases correctly. Advise the owner never to force a locked door; a locked front-load door releases on a brief power cycle or after the drum stops and any water drains, and a microwave latch should never be pulled against. Note that repeated forcing can crack the inner door panel on a microwave, which is a leakage path that must be checked.
